Well I ended up getting the CEL/fuel tank pressure issue figured out - that info here: http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/threads/166543-Weird-noise-coming-from-gas-cap?p=2230277#post2230277

I wouldn't say for all wheeling, but rather when you are climbing slowly (lets say under around 20ish) I keep the tranny in "2" or "L". All new Montero owners get the trans warning light on their first time out or two and this is usually the reason why. It came on my first time out, and never again after I asked the same question.

A tranny fluid and filter change is a good idea though depending on how your fluid looks. You can get the SPIII from either Mitsu dealer in the valley.

Very cool rig, what part of town you in?

Thanks for the advice and info Sonic. I took 'er out yesterday and did keep it in either 4Lo or L/2 the whole time and didn't have any issues. It was 50 something degrees most of the day, so that may have helped. I'm definitely still going to do the tranny flush, and keep an eye out for the AWD Montero Sport axle, but its nice to be able to wheel without overheating the transmission in the meantime.

I'm in the East Valley - Chandler/Tempe area, what about you?

Here's a couple of the ride yesterday:

I'm currently in the middle of replacing the front cam seals, so I have the radiator out, and I was trying to figure out if I have an OEM radiator or if it's been replaced. I can't seem to find any markings or brand on mine. Anyone know if the OEM has a certain marking or anything to differentiate it from aftermarkets?

Put a few hours into tearing the Monty down on Sunday, but haven't been able to get back to work on it since. Here's how it currently sits:

Looking for that thing i just had in my hand...
The stock ones are labeled Denso and the mounting flanges are stamped not flat (feel for a raised section near the bolts). The lower outlets are bent not arbored, feel for a hard angle (cut and welded at an angle.

Thanks Adam. Sadly, I ended up finding a grease covered CSF Indonesia sticker on the radiator... so apparently a previous owner replaced it. Thankfully at least my oil soaked alternator seems to be OEM.

31's get me just about everywhere i need to go, still pull 20mpg and the truck doesnt look odd. I just got a set of 4.90's though so that's going to change. just get a front axle housing with the gears you want and a rear pumpkin from an older SR. It'll likely run you under $500 and take a weekend to pull and a weekend to install if you're not the most skilled. It's not tough though... I'd suggest trying 'just truck and van' in the valley.

What check engine code are you getting? Can you elaborate?

The early 4.90(4.88) equipped SR rear axle is not compatible with the gen 2.5 ABS system, may have different flange as well. The later 4.63 SR axle is a direct swap but not much better than the 4.2 gears in his current axle, the Sport 4.90 axle is what he wants and have the gears swapped, even easier if he can find the rare Sport air locked axle.

They really aren't that rare, I've run across quite a few. There's one on eBay right now.

The statement was Montero Sports with the air locker are rare.

Actually, the statement was the 4.90 sport air locked axle is rare, do I need to go back and quote the sentence where I said this? Why would a 4.2 axle even be considered when that is what he already has??

Anybody know the specs on the transmission oil cooler hose (Item #1 in diagram below)? Mine was pretty dried out and I ended up tearing it up when I removed it from the radiator... Just curious if this is something I can use generic hose for, or what I should look for in replacing it.
