My 2005 Horizon Trailer Build/ refit

Hey guys, just thought i would share with you my build as it progresses over the next couple of weeks as i start to get ready for a 6 week 15,000mi ish road trip from south florida to Alaska and back.

I decided on buying a trailer after doing a 17,000mi trip thought the US last year in my 2008 FJ cruiser with a Ironman RTT. With all the gear loaded there wasnt much room in the truck even with the rear seats removed. I'm hoping that now with the trailer it can free up most of the truck and i might even be able to put the seats back in. After looking at Many Trailers new and used i decided on a used AT Horizon as they have a great track record for reliability and toughness. I trolled the expedition trailers for sale section on here for a wile passing on a few that were posed until a 2005 horizon with a globetrotter tent installed came up in Kansas city. The trailer had light usage and the exact tent i wanted. After a few conversations with the owner the deal was done. The next thing was working out how to get it from KC to South Florida.

The old owner was super cool and was willing to hold onto the trailer for a few weeks while i worked out shipping. I spoke with many many people and couldn't find anyone less than $2k to drive it the 1,500miles from KC to Ft. Lauderdale. I eventually spoke with Mario at AT and he put me in touch with their driver who delivers the new ones and he just so happened to be dropping off a new chaser near by in the coming weeks. I ended up paying a little over 90c/mile for him to tow the trailer down and he did so quickly and efficiently and the trailer arrived in great condition.

I'm a Private yacht captain so i have done all this while at anchor down in the British Virgin Islands. The trailer was delivered to my local 4x4 shop to get some modifications done. First on the list was adding a rear swing out and Led lighting from AT, Mario hooked me up with and was able to send up in there new chaser and then transfer across to my Horizon for the trip down to FLL saving me some $$ on shipping.

Also on my list of Mods to do straight away is:
-paint/ Linex the trailer Black to match the truck.
-Tires wheels to match my FJ
-Add Aux reverse lights (rigid dullys)
-Add under trailer LED Rock lights (Tantrum)
-Add 2nd AUX battery. I have optima dual battery set up in truck any suggestions on batteries for the trailer?
-Add solar regulator and 120W Power film foldable solar panel. Add clips to Globe trotter cover and fly so it can be secured by the grommets in the solar panel.
-Power inverter in the nose box
-Rotopax on top of flip up lid
-12V power in the tent to charge phones and run 2 marine fans and Led lighting
-Add a 5lb fire extinguisher inside the nose box
-Add a rechargeable 12v maglight to nose box
-Add an extra 12" to the receiver by welding.

I also want to put some draws in the side boxes i've seen a few people that have custom ones. Does AT offer a kit or should i get my carpenter to make me some?

I'll post more pics as work progresses and would love to hear of any other mods done to these great trailers.

things are coming along nicely. Yesterday the trailer was stripped down and Taken to the paint shop.
Tent had to come off as well as the water tank and gas bottle. I also got the to remove all the stickers... Sorry AT

Cant wait to see the finished results once it matches up with the truck.

Also while the trailer is in at paint work is starting on the truck.
The work list on the tuck is jus as long or longer than the trailer... I usually do all the work myself but since im away and want to get on the road as soon as i get back i'm having to get a shop to do it all.

I'm sure it's the lighting, but it looks more grey than black. Can't wait to see it once it's finished.

Thanks guys im super excited to see it myself

I thought the same thing but i was assured it was black and matches the truck perfectly.

I just ordered the 3 wheels and tires to match the truck and they are currently being balanced.

Things are coming along nicely

Looks great. At this point it is pretty much a new trailer. Three wheels??? Are you adding a spare carrier to the trailer? Any plans to change out that torsion axle?

Let me know when you're expecting to be in the Yukon. Will have to have a beer.
I love beer!! will def let you know.

Thx the new paint covered up what little rust spots there were and she's looking beaut... Would love to do the axle but not this time putting in enough $$$ at the moment.. I ordered the swingout from AT so thats the 3rd wheel. She's really starting to come together

It's nice to see you are taking pride in that trailer. It's also fun to make it your own. I'm looking forward to the finished photographs as well as seeing some shots from your travels. Enjoy!

I'd really be interested in what you think of the weight distribution with the spare hanging off the rear. I only have a single battery up front and have an ARB 50 on a rear slide. I am still debating a rear swing arm.

I'm pretty sure it will be ok. It was either add the spare on the trailer or put a new Kaymar dual rear swing out on the FJ.... this was the cheaper option for now.

I'll let you know what i discover
