was water sucked in thru the intake? may want to check to see if the air filter is soaked. A worst case too could be a vapor lock if water was ingested or even bent valves.

The good news is that the MAF sensor killed the engine before water could get sucked in. Feelin' lucky about that one.

S/M lights are caused buy low voltage during cranking. Is the disco slow cranking at start up? Also does your scanner power up and not communicate?

Not a Rover guy but I did something similar to my Xterra. It was submerged in water that was just barely under the air intake for around 5 minutes. Was stuck, never turned it off, managed to get it pulled out by a friend. Truck started afterwards but would go into a limp mode. After disconnecting the battery to clear the codes I was able to drive it home OK. Checked the codes when it got back into limp mode (next day) and it turned out to be a faulty (short) throttle body. When there is a code connected wight he throttle body it automatically sent the computer into limping mode to avoid getting the throttle body stuck into an open position. Eventually the electrical motor of throttle body got stuck from the corrosion and sand that had gotten into it and would not let me start it. After I replaced it along with the alternator and dried the interior, the truck has been running fine. (knock on wood).
Cheers and good luck.

Great news! s/m light are now off, and i'm not throwing any more codes.

I do not believe that the crank is slower than normal. I'm currently without my multi meter but I will try to connect again in a few weeks. It's not currently being driven.

Please tell me you drained and refilled the trans before starting it.
I drained the trans, diffs, and the transfer case multiple times. I was in such a hurry i didn't even lay cardboard down over the gravel.

I believe the culprit to the s/m was the z,y,z switch. At first it flashed P,R,N, and D. After a while it only flashed D. I tried to get up in there to dry it out, but only got the plug. After letting it dry it seemed to work. As Nasko said, "knock on wood."
