Nice Jeep, My friend Paul has a 79 CJ7 with a 5cyl Merc turbo Diesel, and is running the AX15 from a Cherokee and has a dana 300 T-case, he is running 456s and 33"s and its just a little slow but hasnt turned up the fuel yet, he is getting around 26-28 mpg from it. the Merc is a high reving Diesel so it needs run a little harder on hills and offroad than the 4.0 but is a great little motor and runs smooth.
He built his own Bell housing from plate steel and is using the Jeep clutch I belive he is running a modified 4cyl merc flywheel, not sure. his current project is a set of Toyota strait axles w/ some factory TRD electric lockers from newer modle toyotas that were recalled for bad frames.
I have been wanting to do this or some other Diesel swap for some time, a Isuzu 4cyl or the Nissan turbo diesel from an scout is another good swap.
