My first Flippac adventure

We just rolled in from several days on the road in our journey to pick up my new/used Flippac. We survived the crappiest Motel 6 that we have ever stayed in, a close call with an Elk, almost running out of fuel, living in a Wal Mart parking lot, and smelling dog farts for 2000 miles, but I would do it all over again if I had to.
I have wanted a flippac for my truck since I first viewed one on here several years ago, but the cost made it unobtainable at the time. In the mean time, I purchased a shell and had a nice camping system that worked for our family (two adults and two Boxers, the dogs, not the fighters). After a few adventures, we realized that we disliked having to pack up our setup each day, only to unpack it a few hours later after we arrived at our next spot. The Flippac became more appealing to me, and even more appealing, and more important, to my fiance.
Thanks to the forum and two forum members, we were able to make a used Flippac purchase and have it outfitted and painted by AT. Many thanks to Agavetraveler and PTO for getting this three way transaction worked out. Though we are in Austin, TX, site unseen, and taking only the word of forum members that I only knew from Expo, we pulled the trigger and had the camper dropped off at AT to get some work.
My second round of thanks goes to Martyn and the staff at AT trailers. Though they were only doing service to the shell and the install, they treated me as if I had bought a brand new shell from them. Whether we talked about the work to be done on the phone, email, or in person, the conversations were all timely and professional.
Originally the Flippac was white with two sliding windows and we had AT paint it black, add one windoor, LED lights, and a professional install on site. Here is the final product:

Sadly, I don't have a pic of it deployed from outside, but here are two photos from our first night after we left Prescott. We arrived in Ruidoso around midnight and set up the flippac:

What the pictures don't show is that we were in the Walmart parking lot and loving every minute of it. Well, maybe not loving it, but if you are on the road, and need to stop for the night its actually pretty convenient. We really felt like ski bums, but it was only for the night.
I am just excited to have it on my rig and wanted to share.

One of many refueling stops. I lost about 1 mpg, maybe less compared to my other shell, but it was on par with the bed loaded up with bins and a tarp:

Glad you got what you wanted. I just have to ask...why the black paint?

We travel with two Boxers as well...my sympathies on the dog fart issue!:Wow1:

The layout of a flip pack may be dangerous if the farters sleep down below and your heater is positioned as shown <grin>. FWIW: a strict ScieceDiet dog food diet cured this with my two pooches. In spite of my spouses request, I won't go on same diet.

Good looking dogs. It's amazing how much these guys can sleep when we travel. I didn't want to color match it to my truck because it would be too much red for me. I am a firefighter, and see enough big red trucks at work. My old shell was black, and I liked the contrasted look. I also thought about resale, and red would have narrowed the market down to only red double cab tacomas. White would have looked like a freezer unit, so that left grey or black and black would match another vehicle better than grey.

Congratulations! The color combo looks good to go. We will expect more trips and photos.
I hope to use it in Big Bend in two weeks for my first Ultra run!

We have tried everything, including science diet, but on road trips, I think we just become more aware of their farts. Our little one, Bella likes to hold in her dumps sometimes, hence the farts.

Congrats on the new to you FP!
The black and red combo looks good, especially w/ black rims.
I hear ya on the "too much red" for the "exact" same reason you stated.

Nice looking rig. I like the black on red. Big bend will be great this time of year.
Trade the dogs off on a couple of kids. Maybe you'll get lucky and have girls. Cause girls never fart! :Wow1:

looks amazing. thats my ideal set up. I still wish there was a soft top flip-pac for the 1st gen 4runners.

On the dog gas, i noticed that a holistic protien and grain mix worked well for out pit. when he was on an all protein diet he would clear out our entire house. He and our chi/rat terrier mix now eat Nature's Variety Prairie.

Talk about thread drift but thanks. I'll try the NV Prairie.
My eyes are watering as I type with dog gas (see sig).

Just a few observations in my first week with the flippac. For one, the volume of room on the inside is greater than with a regular shell and even a mid rise like I had before. It's a box opposed to be conformed to the bed and cab like a fitted shell. On the short bed models with more overhang, you get a nice ridge next to your bed to set up some drinks/snacks, wallet, heater, etc.. Finally, and this has been my experience since we left Prescott, you will get many looks and questions, especially if you have it set up.
I opened it up at my station today and I must have had at least 6 or 7 people slow down as they drove by, or stop and ask me about it while I was outside.

I found a new Sidewinder awning on craigslist that I picked up yesterday. It's a self contained roll out style, but it might be too long to mount on the flippac. I will get to work on that after my shift.

The key was waiting for us when we got home. Works like a charm!
I did a quick demo at the bike shop a few days ago, and as I was getting ready to close it, a couple pulled in and we proceeded to talk about it and 1st gen 4runners (they had one of those too) for about an hour. I know the flippac is somewhat "rare", but I wonder how many are in TX, east coast, etc....Besides the internet pictures, I had never had my hands on a flippac until we were crawling around in ours.
Next adventure, Big Bend National Park, next week.
