My introduction and my 1hz 60 series

Hey I've seen that truck running around town... Very cool!!! If you see a red-headed guy with a beard hanging out of a 1st Gen 4Runner (or a dark blue XJ) giving you a big thumbs up that's me saying "hi" and inwardly drooling over your rig... I'm really stoked on what I'm building right now, but an HZJ60 would possibly been even better for me and it's hard to argue with how awesome your rig looks aye mate. She's a REAl beaut, classic "function over form" boxy looks and built to take on a scrub bull. Love it.

Having had a 1HZ in my 70 in OZ, I have to tell you, a LOW PRESSURE turbo set-up will do wonders for waking that engine up and keeping it as rock solid as it is now. I can't begin to explain how much better it is then the stock set-up and where I lived in OZ had nothing on the PNW for elevation change and grades to pull.

What did you do for a Fuel/Water sep/filter??? if you;re using the stock unit I would highly suggest you go to a lower Micron (higher screening) aux filter. It keeps these toyota Diesel VERY happy, esp the IP's should you happen to get some bad diesel somehow (usually something you think only happens in places like Africa, but it happened to a guy I know down in S.OR and he thought he'd killed his IP). I'm using a CAT unit I got from DieselToyz Ebay ( http://www.ebay.com/itm/Toyota-diesel-HEAVY-DUTY-fuel-filter-assembly-with-installation-kit-/331170117510?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&fits=Make%3AToyota&hash=item4d1b46f786&vxp=mtr ) store and it's an awesome unit and some serious peace of mind for these rare and special engines of ours.

Cheers

Dave

EDIT: my Buddy Vance pointed me to a shop that I think may be Williamette Blvd Service (he just gave me the number and couldn't remember the name of the shop... he's actually a member here too) for possible help with my 1KZ swap. Do they only work on Cruisers/the "big" diesels or are they the types that can tackle my "little" 4-banger Diesel (if I ever get it built)??? Also, if you find you need parts you simply can't get here, get in touch with Dave at Japan4x4... I can't say enough good about the guy and IMO if you're running a Toyota Diesel here in the states you need to know Dave, he can be invaluable when the time comes to find something and he's a stand-up guy to boot (Example: I had the wrong oil-pan for my that we'd worked out the PN on together and when it turned out to be wrong and I got the RIGHT PN, he threw it in the mail and got it to me with the WEEK from Japan without me paying through the nose for special shipping... stuff like that makes me a loyal customer)

It's funny how small a world this is.

Right on, thanks for the compliments! Ya, I'm way more into the function part at the moment and trying to make mods that I really use and won't break. I'm going to be healing from the cost of the 1hz swap for a bit but a turbo would be really nice. It's already noticeably more powerful than my 2f, but still has me wanting to put my leg out and kick on very steep grades. I'm happiest about the mileage. It makes driving more fun when I don't have to fill up every couple days.

As far as the fuel filter we went with a Racor R20S 2 Micron with a clear view bottom and I'll carry spare filters since it's so fine. It's from a marine application I believe. I'll definitely get to know your Japan Parts guy I can tell already. Josh is my mechanic and I know he works on a really cool toyota camper 4x4 with a 1kz I believe. He knows diesels.

Thanks for the info. Maybe see you on the road next time!

That CAT filter looks awesome. I can't believe how much the good filters cost! That was the thing about this conversion was the extra parts. Holy cow. I bought engine mounts from Valley Hybrids and new bushings, pulleys, timing belt/tensioner/ starter, alternator.... the list goes on. It was 3 pages of invoices. I just didn't want to fix each part slowly over the years and the engine was out on a crate so I went for it.

Those Racor filters are nice too aye, looks like you've got it handled, very nice... I think that's the same model of Racor I was looking at too but after awhile I started to go loopy trying to keep them all seperated in my head/notes and just went with the CAT unit because I've gotten a lot of help from DieselToya boards and they have proven it's a good filter for our applications so it was mroe out of laziness then anything but yeah, they're NOT cheap aye.

I know what you mean about the 1HZ W/O the Turbo too (one of the Troupys on the Station I lived on had a bone stock 1HZ in it and I was just as happy to drive that around as anything), it's a GREAT engine and it pulls well all over the place really and get's incredible mileage when you consider it's not terribly light or in a light truck either. When I did the turbo on my Ute though it was like I added another 6 cylinders and it really made the power curve "good everywhere" in my experience. But by the same token I can certainly feel you on the "healing aspect" of getting a build done and trying to stop spending money hand over fist to get it on the road. Should you get back on your feet, so to speak, and decide you want to do the turbo thing drop me a PM cause I've got notes here somewhere from when we did it and even though I was in Australia at the time it's all stuff that could easily be replicated/sourced here in the US and it sounds like your shop could very easily put it together for you. The key is the "low pressure" bit as it keeps the solid reliability and "run forever" aspect of the 1H but gives it that kick in the but it needs in certain places. Turbo or no, that is one AWESOME rig you;ve built yourself there mate and I'd LOVE to see it in person one of these days when I've got my own "clatter wagon" finished.

Question: (sorry to get OT in your thread) So Josh is at Willamatte Blvd. Service??? If so that is AWESOME to know someone in town who works at a shop and is familiar with the 1KZ engines and runs one himself cause while I've learned a LOT and feel pretty comfortable wrenching on it so far, it's nice to get some positive feedback and know that there's a mechanic out there who can help me out and/or service the truck once I finally get it built... Thanks for the heads up aye.

Parts... oh my word PARTS!!! This little part, and that little part, oh and what about those parts and maybe some of these parts??? I'm starting to have a love/hate relationship with the word... I thought I had a good handle on what all I needed, and had a "package" together to do the swap... Close but no cigar and even "close" is a bit of a stretch of the term aye ;) hahahaha . I've spent quite a bit on little pieces here and there and I'm still not even done and at this point some of the little "extras" I'm gonna hold off on and just do as I, like you, recover from the process of doing the swap and the major build. I'm 100% with you though on the concept of doing it right the first time. I want this truck/engine to as close to a "new vehicle" as it can be and not be chasing little parts here and there for years after I finally get it built. I'm doing the same thing in terms of pulleys T-belt etc. and I am redoing all the gaskets while it's still out of the truck too, so we're on the same page there for sure. I'm even going so far as to source a much higher output alternator for a John Deere tractor that's a near direct replacement for my 1KZ's stock unit because I want to have power in reserve for all the "junk" I'll eventually be adding to the electrical load down the road. I will say though that the new crop of LED lights are awesome for folks like us who like to SEE things but don't want to have to run dual alternators to power everything aye.

Beaut of truck mate, enjoy the beauty of that engine/chassis combo cause you've got something special and very very sweet there. I'm now a committed "diesel head" and have been for quite some time. I can't wait to be whistling and clattering down the road here one of these days.

Best to ya and I'll keep my eyes peeled for that lovely truck of your.

Cheers

Dave

Right on Dave. Thanks again. Like you I research the heck out of everything and this is the result. Nice to hear from like-minded people.

Yes, Josh and his dad Larry run Willamette Blvd Service Center. They've been there forever but I don't think they try at all to market themselves. I mean how much work can 2 guys really take on? But that being said, I bet Josh would love to do more swaps. He doesn't own the 1kz, it's just a sweet camper 4x4 I saw him working on. He drives a big 60 with a 6.2 chevy diesel I think.

Give him a ring and say you talked to me.

Andy
