My storage solution...

For two adults, two small kids, and a dog, the JKU still has it's limits for storage, I'm still trying to decide if I want a roof rack, or build an expedition style trailer. I like the idea of a well equipped trailer so we can set up a base camp and venture out from there. That is still a little ways away due to cost, so after seeing the camp kitchen/drawer system a friend built in his jeep I set out to see what I could come up with.

After a bit of time with a tape measure, some research online and seeing what I had laying around I built this. Using the dimensions I found online I found I could fit four Rubbermaid action packers and have room for gear, or dogs on top.

What I had is a little thin for two dogs, but I have the room needed for our dog in the back seat so it's all storage now.

Full load with almost everything need for a weekend in the back country.
Instead on four action packers I was able to load the essential 's into two, and our BBQ fits in the other side , so that was a bonus.

You say small kids. If one has short legs you can use thier floor board for storage. We have use three 3 gallon reliance containers on one side. Keeps the weight low and center.

The problem would be getting to the action packers without having to take out everything on top. Perhaps you could build some legs for the plywood so the action packers could slide out while the rest remained intact. Just my two cents for what it's worth.

Just an idea.
And I only used 1 sheet of 3/4" dragon g2s plywood.

You can a little better in this picture, I used 3/4" bolted to the inner fender, and one more in the middle that the top piece is screwed into, so I can access everything underneath with out unloading everything.

You can have a raingler net at the ceiling above the backseat to put stuff on.

Here it is in my 2 door, have not used it yeat in my 4 door because it will probably hit tall adults in the head when sitting in the backseat.

I have the Smittybilt seat covers black, alot of bags for stuff

There are alot of space under the backseats and front seats for stuff.

I have the Frontrunner interior rack, I really like it. I can sleep under it.

I have downsized my stuff

To the left the new, to the right the old.

From the left airmadrass, sleeping bag, Helinox chair

It goes about 3 Helinox chairs on one small camping chair

Very nice set up, I'm working on convincing my other half to pack lighter and smaller items, I want to add a tailgate table nice for making a lunch on.
