My Syncro Build

its the 2.5 SOHC, this one is from an 02 outback, but any 2.5 from 00-04 is the same. this is my first foray into OBD2 land, so far--wiring is easier. my prior 3 conversions were OBD1

progress is slow since i run a small moto shop as well, and its the seaon. I planned on having the van done by now

Observer
You should figure out what you have into this project, add 20% to all the parts and then another 20% for labor and sell them. The biggest downfalls of all these old synchros is the horrid engine and the 30 year old ratty interiors.

This thing is sweet!

pahse 3, subaru 2.5 install

i finally can post phase 3 completion, 02 Subaru 2.5L obd2 install to replace what VW engineers considered OK power plant

1. slow progress with addition of a new shop dog, spent alot of time training with her

2. motor prep, remove top parts of motor to reverse cooling manifold, makes a cleaner install and less cluttered plumbing

3. shop dog helping prep bottom of motor

4. BORING, small car cast 5 qt oil pan. ive done lots of modified, welded pans in the past--all of them leaked. this is a nice product and holds 5 qts and give good ground clearance. i can give it my recommendation

5. motor prep done

6. ugh, i hate this part. this is a stock 02 subaru outback wiring harness ready to start modifying it to work in the van

7. clean up started

8. getting there, most unused wires are gone and just need to relocate/lengthen some

9. which means its time to pull this piece of ....., i mean fine german engineering. look at thats rats nest of an after thought (i do like the old air cooled motors this was "adapted" from)

10. motor and dirty tranny pulled

11. i hate these motors so much, i even delivered it to someone who wanted it

12. tranny prepped (and mostly clean) with small car bellhousing. i really like this product to, eliminates the crappy VW/vanagon slave cyl, and the unreliable Bosch starter replacing it with the subi starter. also used subi flywheel. whole system just makes sence, and has come a long ways since the gen 1 bellhousing i did a while ago.

13. mated and going back into van

14. completed wiring with subi ECU in the factory VW box which mounts in stock underseat location.

15. missed some steps here, lots of loose ends tied up, including rebuilding the front end of the van

16. AHHHH, not thats what the engine bay SHOULD look like, no wiring rats nest

17. out of the shop finally and going on shake down cruise

18. looks much better with 16" steelies and BFG all terrains

19. paying tribute to who made the syncro possible anyway

20. shop dog approved--yeah--she grew alot during this process

Nice! But at the growth/size of the dog, to quote the movie Jaws, "We are going to need a bigger van(boat)"
