Need advice - buying a truck

If you get a 3/4 truck with an 8' bed you can find campers cheap. 6.5 campers get swapped up by 1/2 ton guys and hold their value.

If you are talking anything but a pop-top slide-in camper then don't even begin to look at F150s or Tundras! For most slide-ins even an F250 is inadequate. I started with a SRW 1 ton and ended up changing to a dually to handle the weight. Camper manufacturers list the weights of their units with nothing in them and empty tanks and try to tell you those things weigh ~ 2000 lbs. NOT! Most hard-side slide in campers, once loaded for traveling, will weigh in excess of 3000 lb and I've seen actual weights of some of the bigger units going anywhere from 4500 lb to 6000 lb.
Lots of discussion of truck capacities and slide in campers on the RV forums like RV.net and iRV2.

Yep. Nobody should bring more than a backpacks worth of gear on a camp trip with those. You really have to be careful about weight.

Do 4 people really need 4 campfire chairs? Half the time, half of us are standing, cooking, on a blanket, etc.
Do we really need a dozen dishes for 3 people? Paper plates weigh nothing and burn perfectly.

Cross the Tundra off your list because it can't properly handle what you want to do. I have one.

If you like the camper van idea and can fit one into your budget, think about a used SportsMobile on the E-350 platform. That seems to be the one that is most commonly available, and looks like a nice package.

If you decide to go with a used pickup, think about a 3G Dodge with the Cummins 5.9.

New pickup, look at the Ford Tremor with the right options for your situation.
