Need advice: Considering an E350 passenger van

I'll try to get more pics today.

I want to get the shop and wiring manuals for the van. I see original hard copies on eBay for around $35 + shipping and PDF copies on CD for $15. I doubt they're factory CDs. Has anyone had issues with the PDF copies like poor resolution, missing sections or information, etc?

Some of the original CDs have a date code built in so they'll "expire" after a certain amount of time. You can bypass that and still get them to work with some fancy computering but kind of a pain. My preference is the hardcopy manuals for sure because I tend to write a bunch of notes in them while I'm looking for stuff. The PDFs are clear with good resolution and they're the same exact material as the printed versions. I just don't find them as easy to deal with as you always need your computer with you to use them. My $0.02 anyways...

Glad you found one that makes you happy!
I wonder how the V10 and the gears will effect the mpg?
I'm betting it's fun as he'll to nail the pedal lol. I had 3.55 gears in my V10 and it would roast the tires!
Moar pictures and enjoy.

Wait you only took a few weeks and less than 30 posts to find a van? Maybe the other searcher could get off the pot. Lol

The V10 and 4.10s are fun unloaded around town. I'll say that much. :smiley_drive: I know mileage suffers, but it's hard to say how much until I get a few tanks in. Sub 10 mpg for sure. Probably not close. 4.10s aren't the best fit for my current needs, but they're fun for now. I'm guessing optimal mpg occurs somewhere between 50 and 55 mph. Here are a few more pictures. My plans are pretty modest but I'm going to start a new thread about my first van after I get some initial observations together.

We put about 2400 miles on the van on our first road trip last week, averaging 12.7 hand calculated mpg driving from Portland to LA and back. We weren't light on the throttle, averaging close to 70 on I-5 through much of Oregon, then 70-80 from Redding to LA. We had some LA city driving from Anaheim to Santa Monica and Universal City on two days, plus a day drive to San Diego. The van was lightly loaded with six people, luggage, a few coolers, road food and some odds and ends. I was really surprised how much room there is behind the 3rd row bench when you factor in under-seat storage. We took out the middle row bench to give our teenage boys plenty of leg room and packed the coolers and dry food behind the first bench for easy access.

I will say it's damn nice to have a vehicle with room for everyone and all our stuff that can hold freeway speeds in overdrive climbing the Siskyou Summit and Grapevine like it's nothing. I don't think I'd trade the 4.10 gears. This beast isn't my DD, and I'd rather have a more responsive van than an extra 1-3 mpg for the times I do use it.

I did have a small hiccup I need to address. I think I need to replace the IAC motor and clean the throttle body. A couple times before we left, I noticed upon cold start the van would stumble just for a second, then catch itself and have a stable idle. Then, for two days during the middle of our stay in LA, it wouldn't start when cold unless I gave it a little gas. After 30 seconds to a minute, it would hold an idle just fine. The problem went away, but I had the cold start stumble again today. I'll also check the vacuum lines, elbows, etc to be sure they're in good shape. Am I missing any of the usual suspects with this issue?

I actually picked up MPG going from 3.55's to 4.10's. On the freeway, in 5th, it no longer has to struggle to maintain speed against the air drag, thereby allowing me to back off the pedal a bit. Of course, mine is a diesel, so there is more potential for fuel economy. No one has ever accused the V10 of being fuel efficient. Not sure there is anything you could do to get a 3 mpg bump.

I'm looking for an E350 (probably 15pax) to convert to 4x4 vs one that is already 4x4. I'm looking for input on engines from anyone with experience. I'm definitely leaning towards the V10 or 7.3, but there are a lot more, newer, cheaper V8 vans around. My question is whether people feel the 5.4 v8 is too underpowered to be worth while, or if it may be an acceptable choice. Thanks!
