Need Jeep advice

I am too far out of the loop on Jeeps to remember anymore (I sold mine many years ago). A friend is looking for a (any) good 4x4. We came across this add: http://prescott.craigslist.org/cto/1594857032.html

I talked to the kid who owns it (hes a teen) and he said that it has 250K mi on it, but a new motor 10mo ago (he doesn't know how many miles on the engine, but thinks maby as much as 75k already). It had a head gasket problem, which I think he fixed, wasn't clear on that. New power steering pump and cap and rotor. has a Pro Comp Easy Ride 4" lift and 31x10.50 Good Year Wrangler A/T's. He also says there is an issue with the 4x4 vacuum lines and 4H does not work but 4L does.

How much would you give for it? Are there other things I should check on it besides the normal? I will probably be taking a look at it tomorrow evening.

Thanks much!

My $.02; I'm not a personal fan of the Cherokees, some are, just not me. The fact that it has transfer case issues would be my first red flag, but more importantly is the 4 banger. The 2.5L is fine enough in the Wranglers, but in a XJ, you might find later down the road it to be a bit under powered and forget towing much of anything. Knowing that you are already looking at repairs to the drive train and the high mileage on the swapped motor I wouldn't go much over 1k. Again, I'm not in the know on the XJs, but I think you could hold out for a better find. That is unless you are looking for a project vehicle to tear into, if so then this could work for a good base, but in the end a potentially expensive one.

Most of the common issues I hear with these are Water pump failures, overheating issues and some of the powered amenities stop working. But again most of the people I know who have these are running the 4.0L straight 6 cyl.

For additional insight check with these guys : http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f11/

That particular XJ is worth about $800 to anyone might be looking. That said. If your friend has a couple grand and is looking for a reliable 4x4 he should really be looking at Tacomas or Hiluxes. He could likely find an 86-88 pickup or 4 runner in servicable condition for anywhere between $1500-$3000 and he would be MUCH happier than if he bought that particular truck. If your friend has more scratch than a couple grand he could move up into a more reliable or built vehicle. My brother has been talking about selling his XJ which is WAY more built than that stocker for a little more than twice the price. And if he's got about $7500 he can buy my FJ40.

I would question your friends real needs and go from there when choosing a vehicle. If he can run a wrench then that truck might be a decent rig... but only at less than half the asking price. It is not a sellers market and there is enough wrong or unknown about that truck to cut the price drastically.

I have an 87 2.5L and it's very underpowered. I have regeard and locked so that helps... I would never buy another 2.5L ever... That said mine is fine for what I use it for. OK, on the open road and fine off the beaten path. Also the price tag of this one is high for what he is getting. Look around for a 4.0L and newer / better drivetrain.

MY .02 but you can also check www.naxja.org

Thanks for the advice guys! That's about the responses I expected, but I wanted some better opinions. I'm really trying to talk her into a Toyota, since having had both Jeeps and Toyota's, I'm a huge fan of the Toy.

my xj has been 100% reliable in the 9 months I've owned it. DD every day. the 4.0L motor is on par with the 22re as far as durability and reliability.

Known problems are easily fixed (cps, tps, fusible link) and can be easily carried as spares for less than $80 bux.

the AW4 auto is one of the best auto's ever made and is bombproof up to 35's.

solid axles are easy to work on and suspension lifts are cheap.

I get about 18-20 mpgs on average.

I chose a laredo, which has all the whizbangery (outside temp sensor, compass, power seats, power windows/locks, cruise/auto-shutoff lites, etc) and at 175,000 everything pretty much still works great...no issues.

If you choose a more basic sport/classic model, the less electrical stuff there is to go wrong, though, its not like you can't go to a junkyard and find like 50 trucks to pull what you need for very little money.

anywho...Nothing wrong with cherokees and I have to say, coming from owning toyota's, I see no real advantage that I'm missing out on.

good luck!

oh, and to respond directly. keep looking...there are far too many 4.0L/AX15(manual) and 4.0L/AW4(auto)'s on the road to choose the 4banger.

the best rigs, IMO, are between 1990 and 1996.

They have the classic boxy style,
the High output motor,
high pinion(stronger) front axle,
easier to work on open cooling system,
fully hydraulic ABS system (if swapping a later 8.25 axle for strength, all you have to do is pull a fuse to disable ABS)
don't have the later head that can have head gasket issues
etc...

Knock, knock... anyone heard of that Toyota recall???

Honestly it doesn't matter what brand you buy, they all have their own set of problems new and even more depending on how they were maintained over their life. Regardless of if you buy a Toyota or Jeep, it is all about finding the right one. Well taken care of, low mileage, maintained, etc. So many get caught up in the engine mileage (i.e. replaced engine so it's low mileage) that they forget everything else has xxx,xxx miles on them. Parts wear out and need replacing, no matter the brand. Some are cheaper to fix than others.

As for a Cherokee, they are great vehicles with a ton of aftermarket support and cheaper to mod than a lot of the other brands out there. As for best years to look for, if you really do your research you will find it most universally is '97-'99 models. This gives you most all the benefits of improvements, what is felt to be a better looking and function interior, steel hatch that is less prone to rattles or damage and a ton of other little things. If you don't mind the older style interior, the '92-'96 are the better ones. Without a doubt, a 4.0L is the way to go. Not a powerhouse in HP but lots of low end torque at low RPM's where you need it.

Cherokee's in stock for are very capable vehicles and really don't need to be modified to the hilt. Even a simple 3" lift, 31" tires will get you 90% of most places unless you really want to rock crawl. 4 door models are more practical with easier access to behind the seats and the shorter front doors make the hinges last much longer.

As for problems, overheating is one that comes up a lot but typically that is due to lack of maintenance. Jeep did not put a lot of overhead in the cooling system due to the short but wide radiator. This was a packaging issue of the body design. When everything is working correctly, this system works just fine but it doesn't take much to cause them to have issues. Typically plugged radiator, crap in the block due to using non distilled water, t-stats and radiator caps not being replaced when the system is serviced or just worn out, high mileage parts (like water pump).

I have owned a couple different Toyota's in my life and honestly had issues with both of them. The one that really turned me off of Toyota was our '90 truck with 22RE. At 90,000 miles the starter died. Shortly after that a front crank seal was leaking big time. Then at 110,000 it was burning a quart of oil within 3,000 miles. This was due to leaking valve stem seals and worn guides. It needed a head job and I sold it before I did that, telling the new owner what it would need. I won't even go into a very good friend, the issues they had with their Camry from day one.

Like I said, they all have issues. This being my first Jeep (after growing up with my dad always saying they should be called Heep), I have been very, very happy with our Cherokee. Minimal worked has been needed, my mods have been relatively cheap (compared to other vehicles I have owned) and it has gotten us everywhere we have wanted to go. I will also say it took me 3 months of looking every day to find the right one.

Good luck on your hunt.

I would never have a cherokee older than a 91. My top choice would be 97-01 but my very top pick would be a 99 cherokee.

hehe I'm Heepspeed over on Naxja - we called my 1996 the heep from day one

Now that I've built a 1997 - I would agree to go 97-01. It's much quieter and comfortable than my well maintained 1996. The interior seems more up-to-date (even compared to standard 2009 cars) due to the rounded bits instead of squares.

Aftermarket is huge with the XJ. AW4 OR AX15 - from my research go for either, but don't get a Peugot...:coffee:

Other than that - just know that 150,000 miles is young for this vehicle. Since you're in AZ - don't worry too much about rust. Open the radiator cap to check the cooling system and see if there's gunk in it.

You're on the right track checking craigslist, but if you like XJ's - check out www.NAXJA.org/forum and go down to the Arizona area chapter. SHould be helpful!
