Need more advise from the Forum! 1991 Dodge Cummins

You guys have never steered me wrong yet, so here is another one... I found this a couple weeks ago, it is owned by a trusted friend, who just happens to be a Certified Cummins Mechanic, albeit, he usually works on big trucks...

It's a 1991 (build date of 3/91) W250 Power Ram LE with the 5.9 Cummins. It is an Automatic with 164k on it. There is not a spec of rust on it, although it has the typical early 90's faded crappy paint.

It is the LE with power locks, windows, mirror, ac, all the fixings. The interior is almost flawless, save for a droopy headliner.

It runs great, starts up awesomely, trans seems nice and firm. Tires are above half, they are Goodyear WorkHorse Extra Grips. But it does have some issues... It needs door hinges, and some idiot put engine oil in the brake system. The brakes work but are very spongy. It will probably need a new battery also, as it has set for quite a while, but we jumped it and it fired right off!

The best part is that I can buy it for $2000.00~ But I want your guys' opinion...

Tell me what you think, Mechanically, I trust it as far as the motor goes, my friend checked it out and he approves. It seems his father in law bought it from an estate and never had time to work on the brakes to get it on the road...

Thanks again!

Tim

I love the color my 92 had the same combo which was pretty rare I think. I absolutely loved that truck--if it had 4 doors I would still be driving it. Is it the inter-cooled model or no? Either way 2K is a score for a 4x4 first gen imo.

It is an early 91, so likely non-ic. That means more hp and bigger turbo from the factory. If you don't buy it for $2k I will! It is easily a $6000 truck where I live. You'll love it.

2000 is a screamin deal for a 4x 1stgen. More than likely it will just need pins and bushings in the hinges, that is a common dodge problem. they can be had at O'reillys for about 10 bucks or so.

Redthies, the N/IC motors actually had a smaller turbo, they were 50mm compressor whereas the IC trucks were 54mm.

Darn! Busted! They were higher HP rated though, weren't they? Not that it matters much. kd0ezq should buy it regardless of ic or n/ic!

Nope they had the same HP rating but some of em were ringers. the N/IC trucks respond to pump adjustments much better. I know my old mans truck is the strongest "stock" truck I've ever driven that one is an early 91. Another reason the N/Ic trucks are snappy is cause they don't have to pressurize an Intercooler and a few feet of pipe.

And I agree go buy it now, you should have that thing in your driveway now.

I dont have it yet, but trust me, the deal is done, and it is safe and sound. I am going to plan on a complete brake job as some idiot put mineral oil in the brakes, that is the only thing keeping it from running right now. Also planning on make a dual battery try and putting two batteries in it. Im debating finding a service bed and making "the Ultimate" service truck out of it...

Ill Keep you guys up to date!

Thanks again!

Mineral oil in the brakes? That is a rocket science move right there. That should be super fun to flush out.

For $2000 I would snatch that thing up in a heartbeat. These trucks are getting harder and harder to find in good condition....

Pop the hood and look at the base of the windshield and check for cracks. It's kind of in the fender. Not a deal breaker, but a pain in the rump to fix. I think the non I/C trucks had different injectors, and that's why the pump tweaks worked so well. Google DennyT and get a fuel pin. Talk about a wake up call for an old cummins.

Well, paid for the truck today, it will arrive here in two weeks as a buddy is bringing it out to me.

He's doing an overhead on it and hauling the three hours up here for me.

Next thing will be fixing the brake system since the idiot that owned it put mineral oil or hydraulic oil in brake system.

Will post pics when it's here!

Might be worth just getting new wheel cylinders and calipers or at least taking them apart to clean them out. Water may have settled out in them.

Well, I got the truck picked up this weekend, it was not near as bad as I thought: put new master cylinder in it and as I was laying underneath to bleed the bakes found that the abs valve was bypassing. Found online that this is a common problem, so a couple fittings later, no abs or brake light on the dash!

Still need to replace the front rotors, but everything else seems fine!

Removed the running boards and changed oil and services the engine.

Running good!

Will post some pics shortley
