Money is not happieness, if you love Tahoe stay put and make it work. You said your Mother is retired so she hopefully can make some extended visits and give you two a break. Stay on your path and doors will open.

If you miserably chase money... for the sake of having money... then spend said money to be less miserable... why not just chase happiness?

Congrats on the baby... Having my first too. I am blessed to have what I have, but I know what it's like to look for work. Finishing that AS would be my top priority aside from the obvious. Also, be aware that your home life is gonna go through some changes- that could effect your school. Take it easy with either course load or work load, or both.

If you can move to Bend with a job that can get you by on one income, then do it. It's an awesome place for us outdoorsy types, but I imagine the job market is pretty similar to South Lake. Your fiance might have a hard time finding work if she needs to.

Otherwise, I'd say stay put. Yes, family is far away, but you already have a community and circle of friends who can help. Keep your jobs until you finish school, and keep your eyes open for survey work.

In the next year, your perspective on EVERYTHING will change more than you can imagine. After the baby comes (plus a few months of sleep deprivation), you will probably find that the path into the future becomes much clearer.

I sold my house in South Lake Tahoe when my wife was 8.5 month's pregnant. I had a job in Carson City that did not pay great, but it was a good job. I moved back to the bay area for work and a lot more money. I have a great job with a lot of stress and great pay.
I regret leaving Tahoe all the time and try to figure out how to get back up there. We go up to ski and hang out with friends, but it's not the same as living there. Anyway do what you think is right for you, it is great having family around when you have a baby. Especially if you want to try to get sleep, it is very hard to have a baby with no family around if you are both going to try to work and go to school. Take a drive over to Venice dr. by fresh ketch and take a walk down the trail to the beach, check out the mountains and the lake and think about it.
Good Luck
