Need some ExPo advice.....

So, I just scored a complete rolling chassis (04 F350 6.0) I know what I'm doing with the running gear, but not sure on the motor. He said it ran when the truck was parted out, but I'm skeptical.

I know some of you are gonna say to burn, crush, or use the motor as a boat anchor :) ---- (maybe worse, no offense taken)

But I'm keeping an open mind, maybe I can use this motor for my next van project?
Just play with it and learn more about the in's & out's of the 6.0?

Sell it quick & cheap?

Imho as a diesel mechanic who works in light duty diesel engines day in and day out. I would NEVER take a 6.0 anywhere were a towtruck could not get to me easily. They are a terrible engine and can crap out on you at any point in time with absolutly 0 warning.

My vote would be to sell it and swap mechanical 12V cummins (either VE or P-pump, both are good) and have a reliable, fuel effiencient and simple engine.

Some people will tell you they have had bad luck with 6.0's and some with say they have had good luck with them. I am basing my opinion on the hundreds of trucks i have worked on and the opinion of knowledgeable veterans of diesel engine repair. (I have yet to meet one who actually thinks the 6.0 is a great engine)
 
Thanks. I was planning a Cummins for the next van. I think it would be awesome.

My 6.0 has treated me well, vacuum pump has been the only thing to go bad. I'm just thinking that I can address the known issues and have a good engine, especially with the amount of $$ I have in it.
 
My wife's uncle owns a Ford dealership, and that is why I bailed on the Quig so fast- the 6.0 in a van is a very bad situation IF it needs work. The shops pull the SD truck bodies but not so with the vans, hence a royal pain to even get to. His shop foreman warned me IF it had issues, they would advise sending it to another dealer, or preferably sell it while you can- that's bad:Wow1:
Of course we do get remote, hence a major consideration.

Well, this is a truck frame, so it's gonna going to scrap no matter what. I can make a little room for an engine in my garage, but not a frame. I kinda like doing what "can't" or "shouldn't" be done, so I may just keep this engine, build it up, and use it in my next van........ hmmmmmm. decisions decisions!!!!!

On another note, I've dealt with a couple dealerships when it comes to working on the 6.0 in a van. Per my experience, I'd say the majority of negatives associated with working on the vans is directly linked to laziness. I just had a glow plug changed under warranty, and the tech left my pass side seat filthy with grease stains. And he pissed & moaned before working on it. ---- At the dealership I used in CA, the tech was great. Didn't mind working on the vans, and had a great attitude.

Well, I would think that cramming a Cummins 5.9 into a van couldn't be done, so it should make for a much more appealing project than using an engine which already is known to fit.

Those 5.9's are L....O....N....G

I agree, the Cummins project would draw a lot more attention. And be pretty damn cool too. :)

I can't read the whole article so maybe I missed some critical info but one of the main reasons people are attracted to diesels in general is because of their reputation as being bullet proof and getting good fuel milage. I wouldn't consider any vehicle to have a great track record unless it can run over 200k miles on the original long block without any repairs. I would strongly take into consideration the opinions of diesel fleet mechanics that have posted here and on other sites, their opinions mean more to me than one or two guys that may have less than 100k on theirs and may still be under warranty.
