Heh...hopefuly the cherokee last a little bit longer!
Mine is the opposite: Shows an empty tank when there is still ~3 gallons or so (this is in an 18.5 gallon tank.) On the most recent tank my low fuel light came on at 218 miles from the previous fill up (on my Tacoma, which had the same engine, same size fuel tank and a manual transmission, my low fuel light normally came on at about 265 - 300 miles.) I filled it up at about 245 miles and it took 16.5 gallons so even with the low fuel light on for 30 miles and the needle below the "e", I still had 2 gallons left.
I would also be very skeptical of those MPG numbers. I have a '99 with the same engine and tranny but no lift and slightly larger than stock tires (265/75/16) and I can get 17-20 on the highway, possibly even as high as 22 though that's rare. City mileage is much, much lower.
I filled tank last night and for a couple of weeks of city-only driving (which included a couple of days of short trips in 4wd since we had about 18" of snow on the ground) my MPG came in at a whopping 14.5!
I seriously doubt anyone can get 20mpg with that kind of lift and those big tires.
