Engine power isn't everything, you're right. Take the time getting places and stick with the '94. Use secondary roads on trips where ever possible, see the damn world instead of blowing right past it. Even though we're moving to a newer truck it's not without me kicking and screaming. But it just makes the most sense. My truck is wearing out and it'll be kind of tough to find anything pre-Taco that's in any kind of decent shape. If I wanted to rebuild something I'd just keep the junk I have now, but I need turnkey.

Sounds like a great truck but it ain't never gonna be bigger. The potential trucks you listed are all great options. I'd start looking.

X2. Your best value in a truck-cost, dependability, ease of service, etc. is using the gem that you currently own. Keep things simple, keep this truck and the yearning for something new will eventually pass.

I know I look back at all the places Imelda took us and it makes me happy. I can't imagine having it any other way.

Even the bad times, St. George, UT, in 105F without A/C, frozen feet in northern NM in Jan because the 22R-E just doesn't produce enough heat when it's -18F, 1/8" of ice on the inside of the camper windows sleeping in a ski area parking lot, 3rd gear into a stiff headwind in Nevada on the way to Rubicon.

Memories of times and places.

If your truck doesn't make you happy, then move on. If it does, then stop worrying about it and enjoy.

So far the only thing that really bothers me is the electronic shift t-case and that's just an FJC case-swap away from nirvana.

I recently sold an FJC transfer case for $150 just to get it out my shop floor where it had been sitting for years; wish I had known you were looking for one Dave.

The 22RE is among the best engines ever made by Toyota in my opinion. Easy to work on, stone reliable, fuel efficient, revs high for long periods without harm. But there is no doubt that (like the F-series Land Cruiser engines) it is not near as suitable for highway use today as more modern engines.

I have been really impressed with the 1GR-FE in my FJC - tons of power, reasonable fuel economy, doesn't burn or leak a drop of oil between extended oil changes. 160,000 hard miles and it still runs like new.
