Need tire recommendation - 'E' Rated 285x16

I currently have Toyo Mt's 285x16E on my GM2500HD. My best guess is I have about 17-18k miles on them and they are pretty much toast.

Needless to say, I would like better wear out of my next set of tires.

I'll probably go back to an AT rather than MT. I have been thinking about BFG AT's but not sure how they'll hold up on a heavier vehicle.

So does anyone have opinions/thoughts or recommendations on a tire that will get me closer to 30k miles?

I do tow a 9k lb toy hauler about 2000 miles a year.

I put Toyo M55s (285/75r16 LRE) on my Ford SD about 8000 miles ago, and they seem to be holding up well. They are excellent tires in rain, snow, ice, mud, etc. Moderate highway noise.

I have Bridgestone Revos (285/75/r16 LRD) on my Land Cruiser and they are very good - except in sticky mud, as they will not unload. Otherwaise a great tire with excellent wear. I believe that they are available in load range E.

This is a common complaint with some Toyos (mt and at), poor wear. They are good tire but the wear is a bif concern for most.

I've never had a set but seems like many people really like the BFG AT and some get great miles out of them.

My current ******** Cepek Fun Country II 285s look like they are going to wear very well, and I've read other reports saying the same. However mine are too new (3k) to really tell and in 285/75R16 they are load range D.

I've shod the MDR with a set of Nitto Terra Grapplers, 285/75/16E. They replaced a set of ProComp AT that couldn't travel in a straight line :(. I'll report out on mileage as they age.

try the Michelin LTX A/T2. it's a great all-terrain and an even better highway tire. before i sold my set, i put ~20kmi on them and they still had 75%+ tread remaining.

As for long lasting, I have had good luck with Mastercraft MT (Cooper). My first set was 285's and mud tires. The 285 muds went to 67,500 miles. Second set is Mastercraft MT as well but 35" mud tires. The 35" Mastercrafts mud tires are now at 53,500 miles and look like they will make it to 65,000 before they are no good as a mud tire.

The Mastercraft MT 285 mud tires are D rated BUT the max load per tire is 3,305. The Mastercraft MT 265 E mud tire rating is 3,400 per tire.

I have pulled loaded car trailers for about 10K of the above miles on the mud tires and the truck has always done just fine. With E tires I am sure it would have felt a little bit better but I do not tow that much and did not want the stiff E side wall off road. I just towed a dump trailer a short distance (20 miles) with 17,000 lbs the other day and the tires did just fine at 50 psi.(7 tons rock and trailer at 3K)

Just my .02 on my experience with E-D ratings and long lasting mud tires.

Those might be a little too 'street' for my needs. Also, they are $300 a tire.

The Toyo M55's... I've read they're pretty noisy. Right now my MT's are humming to the point I hate driving my truck. They only became loud in the past 1000 miles though, before that, they were very quiet for an MT.

I'm now looking into Hankook RF10. Never heard of them before yesterday, but a ton of good reviews online.

If you want good road wear I would look at tires with 80 psi rating. It looks to me that within a tire name there are substantially different tires. Maybe you want an AT with the look of an MT.

You didn't really say what sort of off road driving you were doing but I've been really satisfied with the Michelin LTX M/S tires on my truck. For the mild off-road driving I do they seem to work well and are a good tire for towing (I've got a 30' fiver). It's my understanding that AT tires are a compromise for treadwear and highway use.

Wow that is some great wear, particularly for an M/T. But you obviously did your part by taking care of them.

Make sure the tire has a load E rating. Especially if you tow regularly. Also make sure the tire has a good siping pattern. Inflate based on load, ensuring proper tire wear.

The Bridgestone Revos are great tires, but a little civilized. I have had great luck with them (60k miles and counting), but have used my winch to get out of a few mud holes. You will not have the best of both worlds. Get a good MT and run it under heavy load on the street, and it will wear down. Get an AT and it will never be an MT, no matter how much air you let out of it. Just my .02

BFG ATs are great tires, and fill both requirements well. They do have an E rated tire, but it will wear down faster under heavy loads. If you tow alot and your truck is heavy, don't expect much more than 50k miles out of a set.

Bfg at

I am a big fan of the BFG AT.
Good wear, reasonably quiet and they balance well.

I had a set of 315-17s E rated BFGs on my Dodge 3500. I had 50K on them when I sold the truck last month and they still had probably 1/2 the tread left.
My driving was 99% highway and maybe 1500 miles towing annually.

I also run BFGs on my Landcruiser which logs about 20K per year with 4k of that being off pavement. Current set has around 30K on them and still look new other than a couple of chunks that I must have left in Colorado.

The key is rotation. Every 4k without exception.

I run BFG AT's with the (E) ply rating on my 8600 lb suburban. I rotate them every oil change. They are holding up well after about three years of some pretty severe use. For hwy use I run them at 80 psi and for off road I run them at about 20 - 30 psi depending on the terrian. I'm a desert dweller so most of the time I'm on rocky hard roads or deep sand. If you have a (Discount Tire Center) store near you they have some pretty good deals on them at times. I also purchased the lifetime warrenty for them and have not needed it yet.
