Nerf bars

This question goes out to all Disco and Defender owners with nerf bars on their sliders. How far out does the bar sticks out? I'm fabricating one using 1 5/8" tubing and need some help measuring the distance to weld the bar onto my D90 sliders. Thanks all

Anyone?

I'm thinking of going with at least 3" away from the body but just wanted to confirm with someone if this is enough - thanks

I'm having a pair made right now...I'm told that 3" is how far they need to extend to account for the door handles on a D2.

don't need as much on a Defender d/t the slab sides- more of a personnal preference. the euro guys are keen on a body rub rail similar to G wagons on the top of the tubs

So 3" from the pinch seam to the outside of the rail? I've had the steel lying around to make some for a while, using a 2x4 instead of doing an actual nerf bar. Should look cleaner, and also a bit more of a running board as well.

Was thinking about that too. Just not sure if the D2 side panels are strong enough to make the rail anything other than a visual accessory.

Ray,

Must of the ones I have seen are made with 1.5" tubing and are 1.5" from slider. This gives you 3" more. I have also seen the extra leverage bent were they mount to the body.

Side note, "onto my D90 sliders"....Did you get a D90? Do you still have the D2?

Yes...at least that's the design...1.5" tubing 1.5" from the slider. The ones that are being made for my truck mount to the frame and receive little or no support from the seam/rocker panels/body.

Would love to see the details on that. I looked at it a lot, but couldn't see a really good way. I'm thinking of at least bracing back to the body mounting flange on the body.

Sounds like mine will be more narrow than normal nerfs then. I've got 4" total width, and you're talking 5" with the rail itself being 2".

They're supposed to be finished around late April. I'll post some pix as soon as they're ready. Your measurements sound right...

The guy who is making them for me had a set for a D1, and we confirmed that they would have fit my D2. i.e.- All the mounting points lined up on the frame and the length was right, but the bars were only 1" and just wasn't going to work for me. (Using a 1" bar left a 2" gap between it and the slider, which could have been a problem for my kids using them as a step.)
