new 4Runner trail :)

sad day did not want to give up my FJ
but for a family of 4 with two dogs it was just to small and the kids not having there own windows and doors was wearing on them and us :)

yes pics will be here soon at this point stock nothing to see :) hahahaha

bought a white trail model
but also this time around I am going to think things out way better want to keep the mileage as high as I can as we find like most here maybe %90 of our going there is on paved road and the last bit is off the road so on road is also very important for us

dont do tons of hard core rock crawling more getting into spots to camp so don't plan on larger tires this time (things can change) but might see about suspension after I do a couple trips and weigh all our gear in the back and figure out spring rate for suspension loved my OME on the FJ so happy to go with that again
try to see about some thick aluminum under armor that I know we can get for the FJ have to see if can get it for the 4Runner :) and this time around while I love arb bumpers might try to go lighter maybe Demello with single loop same with the rear but would not mind a swing out since my spare will be in stock location want to get a rear bumper that has swing out that will hold jerry cans and propane and another shelf for stuff on the outside inside shelf maybe something like the CBI rear and have some custom work done ?
and once again rails that double as steps ? slee makes some nice ones and still like the all pro I had on my FJ a lot
roof rack going to do Yakima or Thule add on and do a 72 or 78 inch bar so we can fit our canoe and a box on top one of the larger yakima or thule boxes
again loved the strength of my gobi I hated but wind noise and weight when not needed and a hit in mileage
and really we mainly plan on just carrying our canoe and put our bags in the cargo box the only reason I put what I did on top before was lack of inside space which the 4Runner should solve
so daily driving mileage and noise will be down and camping with a box should work out :)
if not can always change :)
if I get a regular expedition style rack this time around going to get something like the aluminum ones from Equipt1

dual batteries of course have a national luna kit still :)
make a system in the back for my arb fridge on slide and our SP gear and kitchen box etc...

very excited and the kids are loving there own windows but they were crying saying goodbye to the FJ :( going to miss that thing but looking forward this is going to be a nicer rig :) but nothing will have the FJ looks or character :)

Welcome to the club (2015 Trail owner here). May I suggest the following to help you spend your money : ) -
RCI full aluminum skid plate package
Bud built rock sliders with the bump out
At a minimum upgraded stock tire size (Cooper discoverer at3) or if you want more clearance and more aggressive tread, Cooper discoverer ST MAXX in 255/80/17.
Your goals sound very similar to mine. I went with a toytec 'ultimate' adjustable coilovers lift so I can grow the lift height as desired. I have it set right now at about 1-3/4" to strike that balance between performance and longevity / reliability (and ok ok, some looks).

does the 255/80 ST Maxx fit without rubbing, spacers, lift?

thanks :)

good to hear a aluminum company for skids :)

tires I used on my FJ goodyear silent armor really liked em then replaced with duratrac IMHO about the best off road on road tire :) but do want something a touch more quiet
but do love the pizza cutter look of tire and have thought of doing that figuring a good compromise and trying to keep as much spinning weight down as I can BUT I know I will take at least a 2MPG hit
not much to worry about but again adds up :) when my FJ would get 12MPG that got old on long hauls
also for sure want the stock spare location to stay !
so might stick stock size this time around and see how it does :) keep wear tear down and MPG up :) and from my FJ and knowing the guys here some who run on stock tires its the driver :) but I will miss the looks cause I love the bit larger tire filling up those wells and the lift etc. :) ahahahahah
had thought about 255/75/17 though tiny pizza cutter look :) and the A/T3 come in that :) hmmmmmmmmm

never had them lots of folks seem to love the hankook here to :) reading some reviews on the AT/3 sound really nice

if I armor up and figure like my OME lift settled in a bit and was nice when loaded :) huge fan of OME for the suspension had 70k on mine with no issue no complaints and handled awesome under load
good idea on the adjust though :)

thanks for the thoughts now my brain is going
in the office now wife walked in tires on screen :) OH GREAT your looking at tires already :) ahhahahahaah
BUSTED :)

Hi Honu,

Great to see another FJ -> 4Runner convert here. I had a 2010 FJ Team Trail with BFG ATs.

After the tire review article in the Overland Journal, which wrote very highly on the Cooper AT3s, I had a set of stock 265/70R17s mounted on my 2015 4Runner Trail. I wanted to avoid a lift if possible, for a number of reasons, but mostly highway travel, fuel economy, suspension drive shaft angles, etc.

Like you, I spend a fair amount of time on the highway and in snow country, and I wanted good highway tires in rain and snow, as well as gravel and sand.

I find the AT3s far superior in snow to my BFG ATs on my FJ. I wouldn't have believed it if someone told me that, but it has been my experience. I even looked at the Cooper ATW winter AT tire, but after a trip in the snow in the UP last January I am very comfortable with my choice of the Cooper AT3s in snow, rain, and gravel.

My needs are for reliable back country travel but not hard core trail building. My 4Runner meets my needs with the new tires, and still gets 19-21 mpg. My last trip in warmer weather this month, was from Indiana to South Carolina where I got 21.18 mpgl over 1417 miles.

Aluminum rock sliders sound interesting.

I just wish Aluminess would build a nice aluminum front bumper.

thanks :) good to hear the mileage to :)

yeah been reading a ton on the tires on the t4r and some here also
looking at weight seems some of the 255/75/17 can be lighter than the 265/70 to :) so that is nice to hear and still a ways off till I get more kala together :)

that was the aluminum bumper company I no could remember the name of :) hahaha thanks and yeah bummer my buddy with a F350 or something loves that company I guess :)

for me having had the FJ long enough and heavily modded at least I have a very good idea now our camp style and what we do where we go etc...
and my massive downsize light weight gear I have been trying to do more of is going to help to I feel with mileage and wear tear and looking forward to getting some money ahead again to do some modding :) ahahahha

looking in the garage today at my new toy :) I do kinda wonder if I want hoops around those front lights now ?
my theory of the bumper is more if I hit a deer I am not left with a car I could barely drive out do to damage etc... and or if I bump into other things

funny was thinking about my canoe on top and so used to the side door and standing up on the rear to get rear access to the rack :) ahhahahaha OK the lift up door could be cool for no door in the way below but never thought of that till I was in the garage playing today :) one of those funny things you go HMMMMM OH well better for getting stuff in and out without the door in my way ! the side door to me got in the way more than helped

I hit a deer with a 2010 Tundra double cab - barely dented the stock bumper. But yes, I would like a bumper like my Expedition 1 on my FJ in my avatar, but I would prefer it in Aluminum if possible. Maybe the Demello steel one is not quite as heavy though

interesting it held up :) maybe the 4 runner is tougher than I think :)

I had faith in my ARB on my Fj for sure :)

the new demello one looks cool on there new 4runner trail build on the other forum also like how it fits in a bit tighter but will miss using my arb on the FJ to get to my upper storage in the garage :) hahaahah

Staying light weight is a great thing...
I am still under my 7500lb GVW on my old Suburban and it really makes a difference on the highway and the trail.

Will be fun to watch you take the lessons you have learned and apply them to the new build.

Have fun with the family as actually getting out there is the most important thing after all :)

thanks and YES even if its just getting out a few miles away at a simple area nothing fancy :) like going up to lynx lake as a simple example that takes no special gear :)
seems my build in some ways is going to be mellow but more about my gear how it fits and packs quickly and still plays big and comfy and integrates with the rig :)
I do feel I got to hung up on the fixing the rig feeling more than reason I was fixing it kinda thing

for sure more room was a huge reason to ditch the FJ and mileage and nice road experience was the other since its our only rig daily driving has to be there also

from my conqueror camper to becoming more light weight and streamlined in my gear has helped a ton :)

excited to get out there
