New Concept Jeep — The Hurricane = Old News?

A friend sent this to me. I couldn't find it listed here, so I think it is relevant to post. Even though the article mentions it as a 2005 unveiling, the link shows it was posted on 11.11.2011.

I thought it was very cool- As much as I have tried to love the Land Rover Defender DC100, it proves to be such a departure from the past, that I can only dislike it.
This, however, stays very true to some original elements, and borders more of a buggy meets jeep feel. Love the full four wheel turn in place mention.
Also with a Hemi!

I think I need a bigger truck!
I always wondered if they would follow through on it or not? I bet, even if they dropped both Hemi's and popped in a single new Pentastar V6 with the 4 wheel steering and 4WD, it would cost 1/2 as much to make, use half the gas, go nearly as fast and be even better offroad.

I would buy one if I had large amounts of disposable income, no responsibilities and an urge to shred trail with abandon (treading lightly of course).

The drivetrain and steering in that is a very unique concept. From what I remember it runs 2 separate engines, transmission, and transfer cases. The front engine drives one side of the vehicle, the rear engine drives the opposite side ( not front and back! ). There is also some combining functions going on to balance the drive forces.

The steering can control each wheel independently. It allows the vehicle to toe in the front and rear wheels and pivot around its axis buy driving the wheel on one side forward and the opposite side rearward.

It is a very cool concept. The computer control for the steering must be pretty high tech. It would be fun to duplicate....

Its cool but unpractical. Its nonsense like this that people like Chrysler is in the red. The amount of money that goes into "concepts" like this is probably staggering and we all pay for it when purchasing new vehicles.

The Hurricane is a "B.S." concept vehicle designed to generate brand buzz and not much else.

The only thing on that concept that may see production is elements of the styling and IFS and IRS together on one vehicle.

Uh-Oh, a vehicle with independent suspension front and rear. Can't be a "real" Jeep! :peepwall:

And who knew the Weather Channel is a source for news about off-road concept vehicles?

This concept has been around forever. There are even Hotwheels and ever a Powerwheel based on it. No reason to get all hot and bothered about it now.
