New Dodge Diesel, need tires

Anyone have experience with Hankooks? The 285/75-17 sounds good, but it seems to be a rare size. Only Toyo and Nitto seem to make the size. Does a 285/75-17 fit under the bed? I also considered a 285/70-17 since they are more common.

I'm Regcabguy. I'm on my 2nd set of Toyo AT 285/70s
I don't need the load rating but it's nice security for all the time I spend off pavement.
My rig weighs 9000# wet with my wife and I. My buddy up the street has a similiar truck with flatbed mounted Phoenix camper. His setup weighs 10,500# loaded. He's driven hundreds of miles along the Pacific coast of Baja aired down to 30# with one slow flat,no sidewall damage. Actually,I had some 285-70-17's first but sold them to a guy in CT with some factory rims. My current 285-75-17's came from a friend who upgraded to some 35" Toyo Mt's. I had a near catastrophic blowout on my popup-equipped 98.5 CTD with D rated Bridgestone's,preceeded by numerous cuts and flats. That gives you a little background on why I'm a fan of E rated tires, just as Dodge is. If I had a truck with a shell and a few hundred # of gear in the back,a weaker tire might fit the bill better. They sure ride better and hug the contours of the terrain. Aired down they'd be vastly superior in sand. With my heavy ******** setup I'd rather err on the side of safety over ride quality. Your truck's coming along nice! I've had two Callen's in the past when Papa Callen was running the show.

My thoughts on tires....

If you have a 3/4 ton or larger, WITH a diesel, go with E rated tires.

That was one of the reasons I picked the tires I did. And I will tell you what, I'm very happy with them.

I dont normally "pimp" products, but, these tires deserve a real good look, if they are available in the 17s...

The Dunlop MaxxTraction. Another that is VERY close in design, is the Goodyear DuraTrac, though, more expensive. They are a great hybrid tire.

I have Cooper Discoverer STT's on my '07 2500. 35x12.50x18". Have 36000 mi on the truck and tons of tread left. I like them a lot but will be switching to Toyo M/t's when its time for new. They are load range E, 10 ply side wall and have a higher weight rating... But the Coopers do great!

If those Coopers have 36,000 in the pictures, they are my new favorite tire! They look a month old! Toyos, BFG's etc in a mud would be mostly done at 36,000 miles.

I was working on dechroming the truck yesterday and noticed my tires only have the hammer on rim weights on the inside of the rim. Does this sound off? However like I said before, it doesn't feel out of balance. What speed/RPM do you guys cruise at on the highway?

In my 05 Dodge 3500 quad shortbox Cummins truck I would cruise between 85 and 90 with a 8.5 foot pop-up camper on. Running 35" ******** Cepek FCIIs. Not as meaty as your Toyos but rode smoooooth.

Sorry, those pics were taken around 20,000 mi. They still have a ton of tread left. But not that much... That would be nice though!

I see a lot of stock looking rims on these trucks. What is the width of stock dodge rims and how wide of a tire will they fit ?

I run Firestone Destination AT's in 315/70/17. The truck is BONE stock, with stock rims, and I don't have any rubbing problems. Before these tires, I ran pro comp XAT's in the 35x12.50x17 and they would rub the control arms at full lock. These Firestone's are load range E, and I am very happy with them so far...

Stock 3rd gen wheels are 17x8 with a 6" BS. The reason you see so many is because they actually look good and can really take some solid abuse. I used to rock 37x13.5's on mine and only had slight rubbing issues on the control arms. Just in the last week to a switch over to H2 wheels as I wanted less BS to clear up the control arm rubbing.
