New guy here with a Gen 2.5

Hi guys. Just found this forum by accident while I was searching for stuff to do to the Montero.

Background on the car:

It was owned by my in-laws (they bought it brand new and were the only owners). Then my wife started using it when she first got her license. Ever since then she drove it, but kept the miles down since she didn't drive too much (work, school, etc). Fast forward to a few weeks back and that's when I inherited it. The car has been well maintained by my wife while she owned it. I didn't know what I was getting other than just "another SUV." Then I stumbled upon this forum and my whole view on this car changed. :D

As far as my background I've been in the import game ever since my first car. I know about modding compacts and what I've owned and built are the following:

- Turbo b15 Spec V (totalled)
- Auto-X/Road coruse B13 SE-R (sold)
- Mildly upgraded p10 G20 (sold)
- Basic bolt-on Evo 8 (most recent car)

Well the Evo has been put on the back burner since it crapped out on my a few weeks back. I still haven't gotten around to fixing it yet and it's just sitting in my parent's backyard.

Anyways, here's the only pic I have of the Monty right now (with the evo of course).

This is all completely new to me. I've never done any off roading, but I really want to get into it. Looks really cool, but from what I've been researching there's really no legal trails in NJ. I'm not too far from the PA border so if anyone knows good spots, please let me know!

Also as far as modding goes I just did some "ricer" mods, lol.

- HIDs
- LED interior lights since most of them were all burnt out
- Installed a new headunit

As I said before I want to get in to some off roading so first and foremost I want to upgrade the tires. Does anyone have any suggestions as far as tire size and brand? I drive the car to work Mon-Fri and do about 40 miles round trip. I'd like a tire that'll handle daily driven duties and still have some capabilities for some weekend fun. I love the look of some nice meaty and wide all terrain tires (like 33" or 35"), but I know that won't be something I can do right now.

To wrap it all up, I've been lurking hardcore for the past 2 days and I really like the community. You guys have a lot of info and are really friendly!

Nice looking gen 2.5! Looks just like mine when I first got it!
You can fit 33x10.50x15 on your stock rims and suspension and rear tire carrier. You may have to crank your torsion bars (free) to raise the front end if yours is sagging or soft. I recently went from the 10.5 to 12.5 and had to trim my aftermarket front bumper a bit. Just look out for some good used tires, and you can go right to 33". I wouldnt go bigger with the stock gearing. The car is definately slower with the 33s over stock.

Welcome to the Portal. The Montero with a good all-weather tire will give you a good ride and will get through most trails. Have fun.

The boys at Overland Journal seem fond of the Falkien AT recently. They are definitely a street oriented all terrain that will be smooth, quiet, yet capable. The Nitto's Terra Grappler or Cooper LTZ Zeons are also great choices. I think the 33x10.5x15 is a terric size for the Monty. You'll still be able to install snow chains if you need to. I'm guessing the wife didn't use the 4x4 system much, so besure to give that a good workout, rowing through the gears and getting the sludge out

which ones? I have WildPeak AT on my Gen 3 and they not quiet at all. howl super loud. Very annoying. Much louder than the Mickey Thompson MTZs on my Gen 1. I would never recommend WildPeaks.

Yeah, those are the ones. I have no personal experience with them, but Scott Brady has put them on at least 3 of his fleet vehicles now (I'm assuming he's gotten a sponsorship deal), but he's frequently reported more satisfaction with them than I would have anticipated.

I run Falkien Rocky Mountain's on my truck and have on the other Montero's I've own. They are by far the quietest truck tire
I've ever run and are great off road.

I have not heard anyone complain about noise except for the post above.

Here is one of the reviews http://www.lastgreatroadtrip.com/off-road-adventure-accessories/falken-rocky-mountain-ats-review/

Wildpeak is the same tire, but sold by Discount tire and the Rocky Mountain is sold by America's tire.

I read several reviews before purchasing and all lamented on how quite they were. I'd hate to hear what other peoples loud tires sound like! Bought ours new about 2 years ago. Have 27K on them now. Rotated every 5K. Have been annoying since day 1. I agree - super good in snow and off-road, but I am serious - these things howl and have a resonance on our Gen 3. Can't stand the noise...

Are yours E rates LT?

I think these would look good on my Gen 1, so may do a swap out and buy something new for the Gen 3. The Gen 3 sees way too much highway time to keep this loud of a tire on it. Not an issue on the Gen 1 - diesel will make more noise than any tire.

Thanks I'll look into those tires. As far as the other post related to tire noise, that won't be bothering me. I'll take tire noise over the loud exhaust I had on my evo.

Luckily for my my wife used the 4x4 system often, especially in the snow.
