New guy looking for advice on low weight TC

I think that will be a wise move. 1/2 ton trucks just typically don't do well with TC, espeically ones large enough for a larger family.

Good luck on you search.

I'm a member of the "drive them into the ground, till you have to leave them on the side of the highway" club. So if I had an "old" car that still ran and got decent mileage I would definitely keep it for general "get to work" use. And frankly.. putting on and taking off a truck camper is a bit of a pain. It would be nice to have a cheaper on the gas vehicle to use for the little things in life.

Alright. I'll drive my old car into the ground, or at least until it's off warranty.

If I get a BIG truck, do I want diesel? (Do I run and hide now?)

We'll still go for a lightweight popup, as much as possible, and won't be towing more than a couple thousand lbs if anything. We expect a lot of mountain driving and bad roads (but not OFF roading). Does it matter for this type of driving if we go gas or diesel or do we just look for a good deal (unlikely since we'd probably be ordering a new one)?

We would be getting a Ford, if that matters.

Thanks!

Mkish,

I have been down the same road. As far as diesel v. gas, my decision was easy. I chose the diesel for the mpg and the low end torque. Now, in regards to Fords diesels there are a few models that you have to stay away from IMO. The 6.0(04-07 model years) was considered to be a high maintenance motor. They are know as the pukers. The 7.3 is still considered one of the best motors in the diesel class. If you are planning to buy a new Ford, the 6.7 is getting great reviews. I just got a new Phoenix Camper from Rob at Coyote RV and the combination of the truck and Camper are great. My camper came in around 1500 lbs, which my 7.3 doesn't even know it is there. The only upgrade I will be doing to the Ford is bigger rotors and brakes. My stopping distance has increase and with the size of my tires, this would be for safety.
The camper itself is perfect. I can sleep 4, or in my case 3 and my dog. If you have any questions what so ever, please pm me.

Thanks for the info, Greg.

My demands are small. Sleep four plus a dog AND have a potty. Easy. :) But not on a 1/2 ton. :(
