so after a heck of a lot of research, i bought a 2010 four wheel hawk and a 2011 silverado 1500 4x4, regular cab, short box. i was told previously, by the canadian distributor of fwc, that it was the perfect truck to fit the camper. i wanted the regular cab so the over-cab would actually be over the cab. i am loving the camper. i am loving the truck. but, the camper actually sits up a bit higher than i expected it to, specifically over the cab. i took the thick rubber mat out from under it and took off the rubber stoppers. now it is passable. its just a bit lower and further in. still, i had envisioned the over-the-cab part to sit just a couple of inches above the cab, not a foot above. am i wrong? ive looked at hundreds of photos. mine is a bit high.

did you buy the camper new ?

or used ?

what truck was the camper originally built for ?

with extra details I might (might?) be able to help with tips & tricks.

thanks

hey stan; thanks for connecting with me. i bought the camper used. in regard to your question about what truck was it made for, i don't really understand that. hawks are made for full sized, short bed trucks according to your website. and gary, your canadian distributor, told me directly that i should purchase a chevy silverado as being the perfect fit. now i find it sitting a bit too high. i'll try to post a photo.

ps; the camper is only a 2010. it's not like it's some really
old model. also, before i can figure out how to post pics, i can assure you it doesn't fit like your photo...

Maybe it was a special model built for a Ford Superduty, they have a higher cab height. If that is the case and if you bought if from a FWC dealer I think they should have told you this.

dear homemade; thats a good point. its a hawk, but i did buy it from a dealer secon-hand. you may be right. anyway, i took a thick rubber mat out from underneath it, took those heavy rubber stoppers off from the front, so it sits just slightly forward and down a bit. its a very subtle difference that is making a big difference in my mind. now i have to protect the truck bed a bit: foam tape over screws, mayve thin rubber mat underneath...

Maybe a small rack on your cab would "close" the space and make you feel better about it.??? I have seen ones with rotax fuel bottles...

If you get Stan the serial number he can usually pull up what history they have on when it was built. I'm betting you got one of the custom ones for the taller ford superduty cab as mentioned (not sure if the fords are still like that or if it was just a few years). When those are put on a chevy, dodge, etc. there is a LARGE gap.

yes. ill have to do something like that. its just that after so much research and then the expenditure, its been a bit of a trial to bend my head around the poor fit. however, im pretty much there now. thanks for the input. regards to you and yours.

Hi Nathan
There is also alot of variation from truck to truck even in the same manufacturer. If you are seeing it be out a inch or so off of the FWC pix that is.

i wouldnt be bothered by an inch or two, runt. but, having taken the thick mat out from the truck bed did make a bit of a difference. i gotta tell you that stan from fwc was great. he figured out the mistake, tried to help, hooked me up with an fwc build guy. in the end, theres nothing much that can be done that wouldnt cost a fortune, like a truck lift, bed lowering, trading the truck for the right one or taking off the sub floor of the camper. so i will live with my mistake and continue to love the camper. and, like i said, its not so high as it was anyway. also, im going to put some lights on the truck cab roof, just to help with the look a bit. thanks for all the responses. im still open to ideas and ill post pics if i can figure out how.
