for what its worth, I just plain love 60s also. It is the cruiser that got me into cruisers. I am a "55 guy" now more or less the but 60 is one of my favorite vehicles of all time.. I have owned 3..

I love the 60 series too. I bought mine just because it was original and inexpensive about 6 years ago. I thought it would be a toy, or a builder or whatever. Instead, it's been my daily driver since the day I bought it! My 80 hardly gets driven, except for long range trips, like Moab, Death Valley etc.

Despite the "look" of the FJ55, every thing else about it is not as good as a 60, and while the 60s can have rust problems, they seem better in that regard than 55s.

The 60 is the ideal crossover of inexpensive, capable, comfortable, reliable and minimal electronics. Arguably, it got Toyota's best stuff-split transfer case, large pattern knuckles, better brakes etc. Add a factory 5 speed, and you have a permanent member of your family.

agreed I would argue that a 55 is not the same as a 60.. Similar to a 40 series to a 70 series, with the 70 being its replacement. But interestingly enough 70s seem to have similar front ends to 55's :). But agreed, it takes a lot of work to make a 55 comparable to a 60. But late 55's are actually very comfortable and the differences are very minimal for these years...

I love my 60 that I stole from Durango60 earlier this year. Thanks for the props on it KC. It's perfect for me with my 4 kids. I just found a front bench seat for it FS on 'Mud that I'm really stoked about. Now I'll be able to stuff the whole fam damily in and not lose any storage space.

Ultimate cruiser???

I think the engine from an 80 series (supercharged or turbo?), axles and suspension from an 80 under a 60 or 62 (creature comforts) would give better utility and ride w/ power to spare. Not a rock crawler exactly but can keep up with a lot of top notch trail rigs; and still carry the fam and equip a long way off and home again in comfort. Ive seen 80 susp. under a 60 but more of a trail type rig.

There is a 60 in Carbondale, CO that is sitting on a HZJ80 frame and drivetrain. It's a pretty nice truck.

The story is: a guy from Denver drove down to Panama in the early 90's in a stock FJ60. He fell in love with the diesel Cruisers down there and knew that he could not bring one back. So, he improvised. He had the 60 body put onto a HZJ80 frame. He then drove it back to the US and no one questioned him about it. He recently sold it and the new owner has it in a shop in Carbondale getting a turbo and rewired.

It's a really nice setup but the body has seen some use. It's a bit rusty and has a few dents in it.
