New guy starting his Burban build

Got more sanding done, the truck is a little over halfway done with being sanded down for the paint. But I ran out of sandpaper today, so Il probably finish it up sometime tomorrow after i get back from the steel shop down in Sioux Falls. Look to see if they have the metal i want to fabricate the new bumpers and barn door fold up tables etc.

You might want to consider body lift. Hockey pucks are cheap, and they work! I reccomend the polyurethane type...:Wow1:

yeah I found a fairly cheap suspension lift instead of a body lift, it will only be a 4 inch lift but the rear leaf springs are essentially out of a 2500 burb so it will mean i can tow a lot heavier loads, especially after im done with the engine and tranny and rear end swap. I got a 325 HP 400 ib. ft. torque 327 V8 and what i believe he said to be either a TH350 or TH400 tranny with a shift kit lined up as well as a 12 bolt posi rear end for this rig. cheap too, cheaper then what i could built up everything in mine for, so that mixed with the heavier duty suspension will mean i can tow dang near whatever i need to lol. all of those components are from the same guy, only 2 grand for everything (gotta love uncles who lose interest in restorations lol). All of that was supposed to go in latest project but he has too many other projects going on and yeah, he gave me a good deal on the parts, so i couldnt resist lol :p as for any additional lift, I think im just gunna stick with the 4 inches as i think I will get the most trail and street use out of it at that height. Today Im hoping to start paint, depends on a couple of things, but i will keep you guys updated!

Also, as a side note yesterday I went to a nearby steel yard and priced some steel for the barn door tables i want to build into my burb and looked at what i could possibly use for bumpers. I forgot my stupid measurments at home tho tho i didnt pick up anything, since they will cut everything for you there, and i dont want to pay for extra steel i wont use, you know? anyway, I hope to have some of that stuff at least maybe next week :D

You might want to consider the cheap spray on bed liner. Its $10 a can. I used 4 to 5 cans for the whole truck.
After that I used a couple of cans of regular spray paint to make my `Urban Camo´
I started with this......

Let me know what you think....:)

WOW! That looks AWESOME!!! Ive never seen anything like that before lol! my plan at the moment tho is to roller on the paint (2 coats, wet sand, 2 coats, wet sand with finer sandpaper etc until it looks pretty good, wait a week and do a final buff) and then below the rubber stips after replacing the rockers and lower panels that are rusted spray bed liner for added trail protection...but man, that has given me something to think about lol! your truck looks awesome! :D

I also am going the roll on rustoleum route after reading about many rodders using it with success.
Put we in teh desert southwest get so much desert pinstriping it doesn't make sense to spend much on a paint job
and my 13 yr old son & wife will get to join in on the project
Gloss Royal Blue is actually pretty close to factory 1970 blue anyway so I am happy

Looking forward to following your progress

yeah I can totally understand your desire to have a decent paint job that dosnt cost an arm and a leg, thats kinda what im going for here too. Mainly since I still want to use it for overlanding and trail riding and stuff of that nature, I want something that looks halfway decnt but it wont be the end of the world if i scratch it or something. Also after i put in the new rockers and lower rear quarters, to protect them more from the hazards of trail riding im going to cover them with truck bed liner. And Im also going to tear out the carpet on the floors inside and spray on more truck bed liner, but i also think in addition to that im going to drill a small hole and fashion some sort of a plug for each side, so i can hose it out and let the water drain out too, but dont have to worry about anything coming in from underneath either lol :p Goodluck with your project!

these are right after i washed it and wiped it down...

Alright well I managed to get the first of many coats on lol :p First I wiped down ALL of the metal surfaces i planned on painting, to get any extra sanding residue off that was left over (and even after washing it there was still a bunch that came up with the rags and minneral spirits) and then mixed the paint 50/50 with mineral spirits (I recommend an attachment you can buy to put on the paint can that gives you a clean pour) and then started rolling away. keep in mind this is only the very first coat, after this dries i will wipe it all down again with mineral spirits and then apply the second coat. After that second coat dries then i will give it the first wet sanding and keep on doing this until i am happy with the coverage etc.

I'll post more pictures after I apply the second coat later tonight. That is, if it dries properly and I can indeed apply it tonight. If not I'll have to wait until tomorrow, but I dont see why it shouldnt.

and if you look at the front fender you can see how the paint looked dry. it almost looked flat, but after so many coats and wet sanding, at the end you buff it and its supposed to look as nice if not better then in the pictures above...

well I got most of the interior plastic panels out today and cleaned them and painted them black, until i ran out of paint. have to pick up another can to finish it but its looking really nice. Also 3/4 of the way done wet sanding the beast too, kinda depressing doing that cuz from afar the paint looked pretty nice. but it has to be done to get rid of the orange peel and what few runs there were. It takes a while tho, thats for sure. Anyway, i have pictures but i cant put them up till tomorow, using my buddies camera on his tablet and i cant get the drivers to work on my computer, so will have to wait till the AM for him to put them on his flash drive lol. pathetic, i know, but sometimes thats how it goes lol. especially when your as inept with technology as i can be lol :p
