Hi, I just found this site and have become engrossed in the "Congo Thread".

In 1979 I bought a 1/2 ton Chevy 2x4, Short Bed, 250 I-6, and a factory 'Bulldog' 4-spd. The off-pavement ability of this truck was amazing.

Key was good tires, the balance of the swb, and the 'granny' 1st gear.

Still have the truck, need to sell it.

As fond as my memories are, I won't be with-out 'Double-Bubble' from now on.

To the original poster, all you need to do is fix that factory rear locker and that truck will do almost any dirt/sand road in the Big Bend region of Texas. In fact, my family of four rented a 4wd stock Ford Explorer one year and did EVERY road in Big Bend Nat'l Park. Even the intimidating Black Gap Road wasn't all that bad from a Jeeper's perspective.

I spent a lot of my early years camping and off roading with a 2wd vehicle, all the standard upgrades apply shocks, tires, LS/Locking rear diff.

You can still go to a lot of places but you will need to focus more on your off road driving skills and stay away from deep mud, snow, and sand.
