Hey

Not that they need to look good mind you but the old H1 has much better lines and has more eye appeal. Even the International looks better and is at least US made! Let's help our economy!!!!!!!!!!!

Split rims, internal beadlock and run-flat

worst time ever is changing one of these done this many times and it sucked everytime. and the MRAP is one mean truck to drive but more protection is better so whatever protects soldiers is worth the money

I like the Lockheed design for the sole reason that they picked the best engine they could. I may be a bit biased (Cummins), though. ;)

the last couple posts:
The AMG Hummer on steroid, is USA made. Saw those testrucks in Moab, they just got back from running Pritchett Canyon. 18K lbs total weight. The hood got a little tall, due to the radiatorstack being upright (as the slanted stack in the H1, does not cool as well) because there is an added on intercooler. For taking apart/remounting the twopiece rims, its kind of easy, but no fun. Ive done several with handtools only, in the driveway.
OK, admit biased also. Hope AMG gets the contract.

Ok since I follow the defense news sites pretty regularly I'll throw some more details in here.

FTTS is not part of JLTV, they are two totally different programs. FTTS was meant to demonstrate new technologies that can be integrated into future light military vehicles. JLTV is the formal program to acquire a new "light" tactical vehicle to combine the roles of the hmmwv and some of the lighter MRAPs and provide a Maintainable/Sustainable fleet for the future of our ground armed forces.

This vehicle is neither. It is the Expanded Capacity Vehicle II (ECVII) HMMWV that AM General has been developing for the last few years and has recently been awarded contracts to deliver a set quantity for use at home and abroad in the ongoing wars for certain roles. They have a greater payload and are capable of more integral up-armoring as well as blast deflection.

Much of this info can be found at length on Defense News and Defense Industry Daily.

Pretty cool to see one on the street, last one I saw was on a military installation and was a much earlier prototype.

Yeah, these trucks have an larger cab.

Compare an HMMWV with this ECV Pictures in the original post, note the height of the C Pillar vs the pickup bed. Much more headroom, Better armored on the bottom.

Hood is kinda funny looking but it's a prototype, early HMMWV hoods were goofy looking back in 80-82. It's due to a new cooling stack/radiator layout as someone mentioned.

Frames upgraded and is now made up of 3 pieces bolted together into one rail as opposed to one rail. I guess it's easier to swap out frame sections if the front end is damaged.

Engine is a tuned up 6.5 Optimizer, better cooling, differentials are now actively cooled as well, not sure if they are locking or not. GVW is about 18,000 lbs or so. The more recent trucks, H1's and A2 HMMWV's had a GVW of 10,300 or 12,100 lbs, but by the time you filled it up with armor and equipment, you have already used up your 4000-5000 lb of cargo carrying capability.

Bumping up the GVW would allow an uparmored truck to still carry a few thousand pounds.

The 2 piece rims are upgraded to handle the extra weight.

I've seen some bits from the ECV II hit civilian hands for sale.

One guy on the HML had the 3 piece sectional frame and underpinnings for sale from a project, and I've seen those rims pop up on government liquidations I believe.

Even with FTTS and the other new trucks, the HMMWV in one form or another will be in the fleet for decades to come.

There is also the HMMWV repower program, AMG and the Military are looking for something to replace the 6.5 down the road.

I didn't mind the old two-piece metal, (magnesium?) run-flat donunt used with the old bias tires. The newer rubber one was a real PITA to install.

The hmmwv LED headlights are around 500$ a light. Kascar sells them, but I'm not sure if they have a 12v version.

The one downside to LED headlights is they don't heat up, so it won't melt snow or ice buildup if that is a concern. Unless they put a heating element in the bulb design.

I've seen the new hummer when they were testing out in moab in sept/08.

we passed them in pritchet canyon as they were testing a duramax in one of the trucks and grenaded the center diff. 2 guys had to spend the night out there as the crew went back to moab for parts.

they had some stock wagon bodied h-1 with full tool kits/parts. it was cool seeing them in the canyon testing. we have some pics on web shots I believe from our club.

So when are these vehicles likely to come on-line?

More to the point: when will the supply of surplus 36-inch Wranglers for 16.5 rims dry up?
