New Member Jeep Commander

Nice Commander :) Being a Full Size Jeep owner myself, I really like the looks of them. I haven't had the opportunity to drive one yet, nor have I seen any off-road in my area. I like the idea you have with the rear tire carrier as well; I was contemplating something similar for my Grand Wagoneer (unless I find one of the OG bolt-on ones in the Junkyard here). I hate the idea of drilling into the body though!

Thanks for the pictures, keep us updated with your progress!

Wait didn't you already post? I remember posting the thread on Pirate, and then you saying you were the same person...

finally got to get out of the house. i have finals and need a break to clear the mind before this week of school. we went up to Sunlight Basin in Northwestern Wyoming. Nothing very exciting, just a nice day away and some nice scenery. We saw a lot of deer and some elk:elkgrin:

I just picked up your thread. Nice build on the Commander. I am thinking of buying my wife a Commander but I have been a little wary as to the reliability of them. I have owned several XJs and she is currently driving a 2000 XJ right now. If the Commander is as reliable a they have been I would be all for it. Have you had any major issues out of yours since you have had it? Do you have any complaints about the vehicle? Would you recommend it to someone as a daily driver?

I wrote a review of my commander here.

i have really beat the crap out of mine. i maintain it really well as well.

my suggestion is to get a 4.7L V8 in the limited trim (2009 and up have the 305 hp motor, everything else has the 235 hp 300 ft-lbs torque). the engine has enough power to move the Jeep around well, and it gets better mileage then the 5.7L Hemi V8. I'm not a fan of the Hemi personally, i've driven them in trucks and jeeps and they seem to make more noise then go. Just my humble opinion.

Thanks for the info! That is a very good write up. I am glad to see that your Commander has held up to the trails.

Liking this build! I always thought that the Commander could be made into a great expedition rig - yours is looking great!

FWIW, we use ours as a daily driver. The only issue we had was the washer fluid pump went out, and we had to replace it. That's it. My wife loves the vehicle, and it does pretty well on the dirt too. Haven't gone too crazy with modding it, I have the YJ for that.

finally put my pintle hitch together today. it was mostly finished for the last month. i just did a little grinding to the mounting plate for the pintle. it is hooked into the receiver hitch so its removable should i need to actually tow a trailer. i'm mostly using it for recovery purposes.
