New Montero Owner 1996

image.jpgHello,

I am a recent owner of a 1996 Montero S that I bought for 800 bucks with 229k miles. It runs surprisingly great but lacks a working AC compressor and worn break pads. I recently ran into an issue where when I come out of 4Low or 4High to 2wd the front two wheels will blink on the dash and they will not stop. I noticed right after I switched to 2wd, it still felt like 4wd because I could tell on the turns but after a few minutes of driving it no longer had symptons of 4wd. The lights are still blinking though. I have tried backing up, switching from 4high to 2wd while moving and still. I have seem many threads like this but my question is, Can I keep driving like this with no harm and still have a functioning 4wd system regardless of these lights blinking? It seems like after I switch to 2wd it eventually switches over from 4wd. I am new to the four wheel drive system so I am trying to get a clear view.

On the other hand, when I am in 4WD the lights are solid and bold, no blinking. I am guessing it is working properly.

PS: I went up a bridge in 2wd and the lights were blinking very fast and faintly like they were trying to turn off.

I have read many threads but I get a little confused because I am new, thank you for the help.

The are all the same setup from 93-2001 weather its an LS or SR.
My 97 LS does the same exact thing. I wheeled it in Colorado a couple of months ago and the 4x4 worked phenomenal. Back in Texas in 2wd the front wheel light have been blinking. 4wd engages instantly and works perfect but disengaging it take anywhere from a few second to a few minutes to happen. It's not going to harm your truck.
