Barnes and Noble has released specs for new models of its Nook e-reader/tablet. Last year's Nook Tablet has been replaced by two new models. The Nook HD has a 7 inch display, the HD+ screen measures 9 inches.
The Nook HD is the lightest 7 inch tablet. The HD+ is among the cheapest 9 and 10 inch tablets available today. Looks like Nook is ready to compete with Amazon's Kindle and Google's Nexus tablets.
Barnes and Noble is accepting orders for the new Nook tablets now. Delivery will begin in late October.

One welcome addition to the Nook version of Android is multiple accounts. It's nice to see a manufacturer acknowledge that tablets are shared among family members. The admin account controls what the other user accounts can see and do with the tablet.
Another change to the Nook is the adoption of a larger 30 pin docking connector. You have to use the dock to charge the tablet. Both Nook HD models ship with an AC power supply and cable that fits the docking connector.
HDMI output is available via a $39 adapter that fits the docking connector. The Nook online store is expanding its video rental offerings.
Travelers take note: The Nook HD models lack an internal GPS chip. The Nexus 7 has one. it's unclear at this point if the Nook HD models will work with an external GPS receiver, attached by Bluetooth.
