New old Suburban

Hey all, I'm new here, and with a new vehicle, so I thought I would post something. It's one of those old "American-made-by-an-American-company" type of vehicles that I like to affectionately refer to as "domestic". It's a 1995 GMC Suburban 2500 4x4 with a 454. My previous daily driver was a 2001 Blazer ZR2, I was looking for something that I could skip emissions tests with, something that had decent enclosed space, and something that was a little beefier than your run-of-the-mill truck. I think I hit it on the head, I absolutely love it.

It's originally a California vehicle, it's completely rust-free. Unfortunately it's now a rust-belt daily-driver, but I have about a month to give my best shot to prepping it against the salt. If anyone has any tips in this regard, I'd appreciate the advice.

The old radiator has a hairline crack, so I'm doing a cooling system flush and radiator replacement. I'll be doing belt, hoses and thermostat at the same time. Also planning to replace the garbage tires with a set of All Terrain T/As before winter. I'm thinking about 265/75s in place of the stock 245s. Will also do some OBDI exhaust improvements, hopefully this will offset any performance lost with the larger tires. As I sometimes have to drive in the city, I like to add grille guards, for those occasions where people park too close and need to be relocated. At some point, I'd like to also add an auxiliary tank, for times when 42 gallons just isn't enough ha ha. Other than this, no major plans. As I said, it's my daily-driver, but it will be used for some country driving, camping, and of course as my BOV if/when the occasion arises.

Here's a quick picture, I'll post more when detailing is complete.

Welcome! Love the rig.

I'm building my 98 to be a great road tripper, mile muncher. I am surprised at how effortlessly this truck goes down the road, and how good it still feels even with 240k on it.

I'll wait for the updates.....

Thanks Mike. I'm also surprised how solid mine feels at 185k. And you're right about the effortlessness. Mine is only the TBI 454, and it doesn't ever really feel "quick", but it's very easy to drift 10 MPH or more above your intended speed without even noticing it. I guess if there is a happy medium between overpowered and underpowered, that's where mine is. I normally like my car cars to be massively overpowered, but for something with the weight and capabilities of a 4x4 2500 Suburban, I couldn't really ask for any more than this. That's not to say I won't pursue it if the engine ever needs major work. :D
