New Tacoma TSB Gas Pedal and ECU Program

So has anybody had the new TSB done. I just received my notice. I have a 2008 4door TRD Off-road 4x4. I understand that they cut the gas pedal in a jig to shorten it up, check the ECU program and install the newest one with the engine cutout program (in case the brake and gas pedal are depressed at the same time), and then do some work on carpet padding on the transmission hump by the gas pedal and change the drivers floor mat. I guess there is an option for a brand new pedal, but the dealership says that you cannot tell the difference once the origional one is modified. Just wondering if anyone with a newer Tacoma has had this done and what their thoughts are? Thanks. By the way, I posted this on the TTORA site as well ( their responses should be interesting). Thanks in advance by the way. Cheer's.

Not sure how Toyota is handling this, but with Lexus, if a customer complains about the look of the cut pedal, we order a new one. You have to have your current pedal modified first before they can order you a new one.

Good Afternoon, I thought that I would post some follow up information on this. I just had the recall done. The dealership did a really good job with the pedal modification, so I did not feel that it was necessary to ask for a new one, believe me I would not hesitate if they did a crappie job, I’m really picky about my trucks and cars. The dealership that I use has always done good work. I’m lucky compared to others and have no complaints; the finish is good and not a big deal. There is no difference in foot placement or feel during acceleration and daily driving.

The new ECU software was installed and works fine. The software will cause the engine will drop to idle (not shut-off) if the brakes and gas pedal are depressed at the same time when driving at lower speeds. I have not tested this and do not see a possible problem with it. I have heard that the speed is at 15mph or less, but have not validated it yet. I’ll give it a try next time I’m out playing in the dirt. I did not get replacement floor mats since I have the WeaterTech floor liners in the truck and they did not remove them. I have the original TRD mats, but do not use them and see no reason for new replacements. No other modifications were made to the truck. All in all it took about an hour.

I do wheel at lower speeds and cannot think of an issue that will arise with the new software, but time will tell. I have an automatic and use 4lo a lot. I’m not a rock crawler but I do get into some crummy trails with steep ascents and descents. I can’t recall a time when I’ve had to depress the brake and gas pedal at the same time even on steep terrain, but again time will tell. So far I do not see this as an issue, my two cents. If anyone has validated this please post a follow-up so that we know exactly what happens.

One important point to note is that this recall is being tracked. If you refuse to have it done it is quite possible that you may not be able to register your vehicle at a point and time in the near future. My friend is a service manager and made mention of this based upon some people refusing to have the recall done. Not sure how or why, but it was mentioned as a word of caution and no he’s not a BS artist. You have to remember that I live in the Peoples Republic of California, so go figure. I imagine that you could be held liable in the event of an accident after refusing to have this recall completed. I personally have not had any issues with my Tacoma nor do I anticipate any in the future. I’m just covering the bases so that there are no liability issues on my part. I guess you can thank all of the lawyers for that.

That’s about it, so far its all good and no complaints. Hope this helps. Happy wheeling, keep the oily side down.

I just had it done to my 06 TRD Sport -

The crew did a good job with the pedal modification. Works just fine and you really have to look at it to notice that its not origional.

However, if you take your truck in for the recal, and you have the "Toyota All Weather Floor Mats" remove them before Toyota services the truck. They will replace them for you with a POS rubber mat. This new mat comes with all sorts of directions imprinted on them. "This side up", "This side towards front", "Only use one floor mat at a time" The mats are about 1/3 of the weight of the origionals and will not collect and hold water.

The high quality mechanics also sraped the paint off the front of the truck.

I am also having the TSB completed on the exhaust ticking noise complete. The TSB covers 05, 06 Tacomas.

Still mad about the new front floor mats.

I don't like the sounds of this at all. I heal-toe pretty much all the time and won't be happy if it cuts throttle every time I hate the break at low speeds.

You got it backwards. If you press the gas and brake pedal at the same time at high speeds.

I want to see documentation as to where it says this. We were never given any documentation that states that cars may not be able to be registered if the recall is not performed. I think your service writer is just looking to make more service hours. Believe me, if it were so, Toyota would have told us at the dealership level so we could inform our customers.
