New to Overlanding

Right now, I only have a sedan. Most of my life I drove 4x4 pickups. But I miss it.

I want to go overlanding. I had my heart set on Landrover (Defender or Discovery). Considered Toyota Land Cruiser because so many people said its reliable. But I'm most likely never getting off North America. And, here, Jeeps are every where.

I don't want the short wheelbase 2-door. Any comments about the 2-door long wheel base or the 4-door?

Well said.

Welcome aboard.
I'd say you should pick the vehicle that really touches you. The one that's whispering in your ear.
Don't pick the "smart" one, the one your mom would approve of.
If it's really in your blood, you already know which rig you want. :ylsmoke:

Then it's the Rubicon LJ. Eventually get a 3" lift, 35" tires. I'd prefer diesel, but I've only seen mods with diesels.

Completely agree with Bill on this. I am fortunate enough to currently own all 3 of the vehicles you mentioned above and all would make great base rigs. For me, it's the Jeep though. The first brand new car I ever purchased was a Jeep Wrangler, back in the early '90s. Stripped-down base model, but I loved. Had fleeting thoughts about Jeeps on and off over the years since and about a year ago got to drive a new one. It brought back a TON of memories and so I went and got the JKUR. Sure I'll keep the others (wife gets the LR3 and I'll hold on to the FJ62 for my boys to drive in a couple of years) but to Bill's point, it was the Jeep that was whispering in my ear. Welcome and best of luck!

Welcome and good advice from Bill, otherwise everytime you see that vehicle, you'll be wishing you had it.

You'll love a LJ if you go that route. I've got a LJ Rubi on 35s. I wouldn't trade it for the world. My father sold his tj, bought an LJ, then sold it for an LJ Rubi.

We are both looking into diesel swaps, either the kabota or 4bt.

But that's the vehicle that spoke to my father and i, what you chose will be perfect for you. That's all that matters.

Definitely sage advice from Hilldweller. I've gone with the "smart buy" too many times, and regretted it nearly every time. Vehicles are too expensive to spend your hard earned dollar playing Goldilocks and the Three Bears. It wasn't until after sinking or attempting to sink thousands of dollars into each of the rational purchases before I realized they didn't put a smile on my face. Find a truck that you love and you will find that you will go to great lengths to find time to use it as well as get it home; flaws become endearing, rattles and squeaks become conversations, and you'll know the inner workings and motivations of your truck more than you understand your spouse.

Keep in mind that, no matter which rig you choose, there are communities and resources, internet and otherwise, to make that rig the best, most reliable, and enjoyable rig that you could have. Landrover, Jeep, Toyota, etc...... All brands have loyal followers. Choose with your heart.

I am LJRunner05's father, and while we have had many vehicles including the LandRovers (and loved them) it was the long wheelbase LJ that offered everything each of us wanted. Dependability, parts availability, drivability, expandability etc. You have to find that vehicle that provides you the transport into that distant place, the exploration tool that gives wings to the dreams to leave the beaten path. Whatever you choose, you will inevitably make it your own through customization based on trial and error. Enjoy, get out there, and know there is a community support behind each.

All are great choices. I chose the JKU because it's what fits my life and who I am. There are tradeoffs no matter what you choose. I don't believe you can find more accessories for any other vehicle out there, which allows me to mod my Jeep and make it unique to me. And, parts are plentiful. There are also Jeep communities everywhere, who you can go wheeling with and learn from.

Just remember that JEEP stands for : Just Empty Every Pocket.... But its all good..

So I have a 1949 Willies truck, 1962 CJ-3B, 1994 YJ, 1998 TJ, and a 2003 Liberty... so I'm completely flat on pockets and $$s that go in them... I like the YJ as it is the most built, my wife will not let be touch the Liberty... The CJ needs brakes and fuel lines, the truck needs new steering.... and the TJ needs a new top... so more $$ out the door!...

What ever you end up with will be fun if you make it what you want it to be... enjoy.

Most important is - as commented by others - that you like the vehicle. Second most important that the vehicle is reliable. The rest is IMHO negotiable. For the Overland Rally I once made questionnaire on how to choose the "perfect" overlanding vehicle. Here just some basics to think about (the entire list has 22 points):
  • Vehicle budget?
  • Will it be the daily driver or travel only vehicle? (If it is a daily driver, a heavy RTT, rear filled with fixed installed fridge, stove and kitchen sink or a big heavy Unimog will most likely not make you happy)
  • How many people and canines?
  • Do you want to live (cook, eat sleep) inside the vehicle or around the vehicle?
  • Mostly shorter trips or week-long travels?
  • What style of traveling: base-camp or constantly on the move?
  • Do you want to pull a trailer?
  • Plans for roofrack and/or RTT?
  • Do you prefer packing lightly or do you need the capacity to bring lot's of gear?
  • Are over-the-counter available accessories important? (as the aftermarket industry definitely does not embrace every vehicle the same)
.
The list can be continued endlessly.
.
My needs were daily driver, capability to accommodate people, dogs, groceries, kayaks and other general stuff, had to be reasonably comfortable, able to cope with any road condition, return decent fuel mileage, fit in parking garages and I had to love it.
As I can not leave anything permanently mounted in the vehicle (plus hate dragging dead weight around) but I still wanted to be almost instantly ready to take off, an in- and out-side close-to-stock JKU and a Casita travel trailer turned out to be the (for the time being) best solution for me.
.
If the LJ is big enough for you, it for sure is a good choice. If some additional space, little better ride comfort and better fuel economy is important, the JKU might be the right ticket. Land Cruiser have lots going for them (so do Tacomas and 4Runners) and I have seen some nicely set-up Nissans too. Oh yeah, a quite capable Subaru Forester with trailer comes to my mind as very nice set-up, and then some Unimogs, Westies and other vans. The the list of possibilities goes on and on.

Absolutely love my JKU. I could win the lotto... and while I'd also have other toys, I wouldn't get rid of the JK.

I love my little two door JK. Between the short wheel base and the buggy like nature off road i think its a blast. I hope to one day have an LJ on 35s but that is a long way away.
