Right now, I only have a sedan. Most of my life I drove 4x4 pickups. But I miss it.
I want to go overlanding. I had my heart set on Landrover (Defender or Discovery). Considered Toyota Land Cruiser because so many people said its reliable. But I'm most likely never getting off North America. And, here, Jeeps are every where.
I don't want the short wheelbase 2-door. Any comments about the 2-door long wheel base or the 4-door?

Most important is - as commented by others - that you like the vehicle. Second most important that the vehicle is reliable. The rest is IMHO negotiable. For the Overland Rally I once made questionnaire on how to choose the "perfect" overlanding vehicle. Here just some basics to think about (the entire list has 22 points):
- Vehicle budget?
- Will it be the daily driver or travel only vehicle? (If it is a daily driver, a heavy RTT, rear filled with fixed installed fridge, stove and kitchen sink or a big heavy Unimog will most likely not make you happy)
- How many people and canines?
- Do you want to live (cook, eat sleep) inside the vehicle or around the vehicle?
- Mostly shorter trips or week-long travels?
- What style of traveling: base-camp or constantly on the move?
- Do you want to pull a trailer?
- Plans for roofrack and/or RTT?
- Do you prefer packing lightly or do you need the capacity to bring lot's of gear?
- Are over-the-counter available accessories important? (as the aftermarket industry definitely does not embrace every vehicle the same)
.
The list can be continued endlessly.
.
My needs were daily driver, capability to accommodate people, dogs, groceries, kayaks and other general stuff, had to be reasonably comfortable, able to cope with any road condition, return decent fuel mileage, fit in parking garages and I had to love it.
As I can not leave anything permanently mounted in the vehicle (plus hate dragging dead weight around) but I still wanted to be almost instantly ready to take off, an in- and out-side close-to-stock JKU and a Casita travel trailer turned out to be the (for the time being) best solution for me.
.
If the LJ is big enough for you, it for sure is a good choice. If some additional space, little better ride comfort and better fuel economy is important, the JKU might be the right ticket. Land Cruiser have lots going for them (so do Tacomas and 4Runners) and I have seen some nicely set-up Nissans too. Oh yeah, a quite capable Subaru Forester with trailer comes to my mind as very nice set-up, and then some Unimogs, Westies and other vans. The the list of possibilities goes on and on.
