New (used) truck options

I currently drive a 2012 (no DEF!) Ram mega cab Laramie 3500 with CTD in it. It's a great truck and we love it. We carry a hard sided truck camper (lance 825) on it and it does great in every situation. In truth we're very happy with it. Alas, we are looking to free up some cash and selling this truck might be the way. However, we will need to replace it with a truck that is just as capable, albeit not as nice likely, for something that can do all the same work this truck does for less money. I'd like to switch to gas as well. Does anyone know of a truck model that has a good payload that is reliable enough to road trip with a family of 4 and carry the camper? 4x 4 needed where we live and no brands are off the table really. Thinking 15-20k price range and could be open to trades. Thanks in advance for any help or advice.

A gaspot Ram 3500 SLT crewcab? A lesser trim and gaspot version of your truck should be around that 15-20 range, no? Maybe go with a 6.4?

As a 1 tonner myself, I will say that they are not cheap. Even the 125k miles or more are pulling $25000+

Sure gas will be a little cheaper and give you some more payload.

Id say look around before getting rid of your truck. You may find the best option is to keep it.

It rarely works to downgrade and take cash out of a truck like that... You'll be buying something older with more miles, and end up spending a bunch on maintenance, and typically tires, brakes etc.
I have to agree there is potential for that for sure. Looks like book value on my truck is 34k of course this is just a starting place and I never really put too much weight into "book" value anyway. I'm going to do some looking for something in the 15-22k range and see if there's anything I could get that's in good shape and would be reliable. Shouldn't be out of the question I don't think. Thanks for the replies on this folks. If you know of any truck models with good payload that could be had for that price range feel free to chime in as the search narrows.

I agree, and hope that is the conclusion we end up coming to.
