Newb Tire Question

Look I'm new at this so if I'm asking a stupid question sorry. I tried asking at TTORA and didn't get the answer or maybe I'm just lame. I have a 1998 Tacoma with 15" wheels. I want to know if I can put 16" wheels on with out problems? (By wheels I mean tires and rims.) And if so whats the largest tire I can go without cutting? I run 31's now. If I have to stay with the 15" what's the largest tire I can go without cutting? I'm just trying to get an inch or so without putting a lift on. If anyone could help I would really appreciate it. Thanks

The reason you got no answers is because "it depends". You can get pretty big tires with a 15 inch center-like 37 inches.

Or, assuming you get wheels with the proper back space, you can use 16 inch wheels and those tires come in a variety of sizes too.

The amount of lift you have affects the size tire you can run, as does the width of your rim.

Your gearing also affects tire choice, since stock gears will be way too high to move around large diameter tires.

Without more lift, you might fit larger tires, but then they might rub and cause other problems. Where do you want to go that your 31 inch tires won't take you, and 33 inch tires will? Remember that's only 1 more inch of clearence under your differential.

So, if you are not lifting your truck, just run the 31s. It's all set up for that (suspension, braking, clearence etc) already and that's cheaper than your alternatives. IMHO you are not increasing the capability much until you lift, bigger tires and re-gear, and that's a lot of work and a lot of expense.

Welcome. I can understand your TORRA troubles. Your can run 33x9.5 with minimal work, some rubbing, and no lift. You will loose some power with that size and it doesn't greatly increase you offroad capabilities just makes things a little easy. If you go to a 16" rim. Maybe look at a 235/85r6 or if you like a wider tire a 265/76R16. That being said I never want to own anything smaller than a 255/85r116 which is 33x9.5. They have been great, but even with a 3" lift they still rub when the suspension is fully compressed. There is a noticeable loss of power. I have a V6 with 4.10 gears. Your question wasn't stupid just a newb question which is perfectly fine. The are a ton of articles on 31s vs 33s backed up with a lot of experience and knowledge. Just cruise through some of the more recent post and you will get all the info you would possibly want. That is what I did when I first got onto the forum and I learned a ton.
