Newbie Needs to Know Which Jeep?

Something else to consider with an awning, is that with an enclosure kit, you won't necessarily have to set up the tent, and can sleep on cots. Might make it a bit more enjoyable for the wife, and a faster setup/take-down.

Already found the ARB setup and the Oztent stuff, and I've spent some time trying to figure out how to mount over a flat-top trailer.

Have had a 10 xterra stock, 12 frontier crew 4x4 kinda stock, 07 fj cruiser ( not even close to stock), and a 14 xterra pro4x.

The fronty was great, went anywhere, bed too small for bed camping without dropping the gate, but bullet proof and fun to drive

The fj was a blast but impossible to see in incline driving ( that's a big friggin hood). And still couldn't sleep inside it

Both xterras were/are great, come with most of what you need and if you are careful in packing and know what you are doing, you can sleep two comfortably in the back ( I'm 6'3" 190 , missus is 5'7" ) depending on the size of the dog, "maybe " that too.

Made the drive to Colorado 1100 miles in a day, and still was comfortable enough to tackle a bit of rampart range road before the sun went down.

Another vote for the xterra here, drove jeeps too, older ones.

of course like the fj. The xterra is being discontinued, lots of parts cross fit with other models.

Really wanted to try a pathy but the quit making a bof pathy before I was ready to buy.

Quick follow-up: Still considering different options as we've adopted a child in October and there hasn't been time for doing anything else since. :wings:

The wife has come around to the idea and we should be making a vehicle purchase before Spring. The list is still about the same but I've befriended a couple more people with JK's and other Jeeps (not b/c they have jeeps but more a coincidence). I've been tracking prices and the WK has dropped in price where the 5.7/QD2 is about $2k less than a comparable XK. There are many options in my price range that I really need to test them before going further. And I now have to consider car seats.

BTW, I recently decide to actually measure the MPG of my xB and was disappointed at being <24. But that also means the "penalty" of going to the 4x4 DD is smaller than expected.

Congratulations on the new addition! And you won't notice the gas mileage drop as much as you think... at least I didn't when I bought my Grand Wagoneer. Good luck with your search.
