Next-Generation Defender

Thoughts on the new Defender? Will this be a true heir or is this the end of the breed? From what I've heard so far here are the specs:

1. All independent suspension
2. coming to the U.S.

Any other details?

Fugly and reminds me of an Amigo.
If so that will make my current defender much more valuable. So... where did you find this information?

I first read about this in Land Rover Owner International Magazine, June issue. I did a little more research online and found another article in leftlanenews.com. I've seen a couple of other press releases online, posted on Yahoo news, but can't remember their original sources. These views are just concepts, as Land Rover is keeping things under wraps and no outsider really knows what it will look like or how it will spec for sure.

Looks like it takes a lot of styling cues from the Ford Flex and Scion xB. Makes me wonder what's the target market for this new Defender.

I think they are trying to stay recognizable as a LR, and I think they are doing that to an extent based on the current LR's. However, it doesn't look very utilitarian anymore. I don't think that LR is aiming at their traditional market with this vehicle, but is rather banking on the image they have built over the years. One can't really blame them from a corporate standpoint, though. I'm afraid the demand for true off-road vehicles is slimmer and slimmer every year. And the company is trying to survive and be profitable. They are reaching for luxury visual and technical impact, not slog it through the rough, utilitarian vehicles aimed at the military, aid agencies, oil companies and the like. Rumor has it that for the first time in decades the British military will move away from LR's in favor of some other marque, such as Toyota. With that said, LR has proven that it's current vehicles still handle off-road better than any other brand, in their own high-tech way. That includes Toyota. After all, the Toyota Land Cruiser has been following the same trend for some time now.

That is quite old news. There is a new "Defender is coming" article and picture every year for the last 15 years....

They initially said (last year) it would be on the LR3 platform... Then they said that they scrapped the idea. I will not believe anything until there are official pictures and specs.

We can only dream they will do it right. I would not hold my breath. I really do not see any evidence that the current Rover engineers have ever been off road...

Points well taken.

You'd be surprised. The prototype '07 110 I had in '06 was lovingly named "Old Black and Blue". Because it had been rolled off-road already. It was originally blue, but they had put a black roof on it when they repaired it.

The dual-mass flywheel that was originally slated to go on the Puma diesel was scrapped because of what happened to it when it got mud in it. We made a number of other changes also due to mud. My job was to torture the poor thing, driving it at full throttle with the brakes on at 3-400 rpm looking for powertrain resonance. Chelsea Tractor indeed.

So, what would the market say if a real Defender could be legally brought into the US, not a soap-box like that study?
