Now that the Grand Cherokee and Cherokee models are in production, attention will turn to the Compass, Jeep's entry in the subcompact category. If the Cherokee is targeting the same market as the Subaru Outback and Forester, the new Compass has its sights set on the Subaru Impreza and CrossTrek.
The new Compass will be built on the same platform as the 2014 Cherokee. The Cherokee's 3.2L V6 is unlikely to be used in the Compass. Instead, the 2.4L four cylinder engine and 9 speed automatic will be the primary drivetrain. Both front wheel drive and AWD versions are expected, probably the Active Drive I from the Cherokee (no 2 speed transfer case). Active Drive II may also fit, but it will be heavier and might adversely impact the all-important MPG rating. No word about a Trail Rated version.
No credible spy photos for the new Compass have appeared. My guess is that it won't have the same angular front end as the Cherokee.
The current Compass and Patriot have one year left to run. For 2014, these models will replace the CVT automatic with a conventional six speed automatic from Hyundai.
