Nexus 7 16gb for $40...should I?

Opinions please. Ran across a local Nexus 7 16GB for $40 and is obviously a good deal. But will it serve me well...more worried about the 16GB with no microSD storage. Looking for a small tablet GPS set-up for my Monty and will probably run GAIA.

2012 or 2013 model? I have an original 2012 and it is not really up to modern day tasks. I have actually downgraded it to Kit Kat (4.4) since that's what it runs best, but it's still pretty laggy. I've heard the 2013 is better though.

Storage isn't the worst, but 16GB is somewhat limiting. I've been looking at the Nvidia Shield K1 at about $200 to replace my Nexus and that has expandable storage.

My 2013 is still a solid performer. Android version updates are still available from the Nexus Root Toolkit. I paid ~$130 for it new three years ago. Great device!

And if you ever get tired of doing regular tablet stuff with it...
