So my mistake, didn't realize that thermal imagery and IR are different again. That clears it up a bit.

I own an AN/PVS 14 and am always amazed at the clarity and brightness of the image. They are expensive, but very cool. The best place to look for quality night vision gear is here - http://tnvc.com

Stay away from any ex-Soviet NVG's rattling around on the interwebs. Those things emit dangerous levels of radiation.

I've been thinking about getting a night vision monocular for camping and incase SHTF.

But I don't know a dammed thing about it, care to enlighten me?

The Xgen 2.1x is one of the best GEN 1 monocular night vision devices below $200. The weight is 5 ounces, which reduces the burden on the backpack to some extent. However, its clarity is not comparable to GEN2 and GEN3 devices. If your budget is sufficient, I would recommend GEN 3-4 night vision.
