Nikon D300s as video camera

On Nikon's mini-site promoting the new D300s DSLR camera, there are samples that show a bit of the potential of using a camera that can capture both still and HD movie images (caution: heavy use of Flash here)

Having the ability to capture video with the same gear you use for still photography reduces the load you have to carry, and simplifies the process of moving from still to movie mode.

Having the ability to shoot HD video on a Full frame sensor like Canon has been able to do for over a year with their 5D mkII would be a nice feature too.

Ugh...I wish Nikon would pull it together in that sense. Maybe they are saving up for something really really good.

Having Nikon Glass I've been waiting for awhile but they are starting to piss me off.

I have pre-ordered the Nikon D300s and can hardly wait for it to arrive. The HD video dimensions are the same as Panasonic's DVCPro HD format only using a larger sensor which will enhance your ability to use selective focus. In addition you get to utilize the optical quality of your Nikon lens collection. An FX sized sensor with a High Def video capability would certainly be nice and would further enhance the ability to use selective focus, but it would never be seen in a High Def Video release format. There were studies done some time ago that found that viewers could not see any difference between the 720 DVCPro HD or the 1080 Sony HD formats. I'm excited about the option of using my Nikon lenses and the fact that they added a two channel external audio input. Now, I just hope that they follow through on their delivery date.

I love my D300 that I've owned since 12/07. Its built tough...which was one of the buying criterias. But to be honest it sure would be nice to be able to take casual video...I do miss that feature. So the D300S should be great in that respect. And they've kept the msrp the same; undoubtedly taking less mark-up with hopes of actually selling them in this down economy.

I do, however, wish the 18-200 VR lense was on par with the D300 body regarding weather seals, etc. It tends to get dusty internally before the D300 does.

I also see they have a new 18-200; calling it the "VRII". I wonder what the difference is/are?
