Thats actually kind of a ridiculous statement to make. My camera can produce the same quality 20x30 image as yours except in really dark situations where noise might become a factor. If you learn the parameters of your camera then you will never miss a shot.
I am kicking myself in the butt right now because of a discussion I had with Trevor last week, but 3 years ago an SI photographer did all of his shoots with a 35mm disposable from Walmart. His images were great and very published. is he less of a pro? I kinda think not.
Saying that your having a D3 makes you a pro is very far from the truth. Not saying your not, but just the fact that you went out and bought a D3 does not make you a pro.

Not a ridiculous statement as I speak from over 20 years as a working commercial pro. A pro camera will make a difference in "the right hands". I could do the same as the SI photographer with a pinhole camera. And so could most seasoned pros. A non-pro would be better off with a point and shoot or a prosumer camera, unless they took the time to learn the pro camera. And even if they took the time to learn the pro camera, they probable would not have the skills as a photographer but at least they have a small advantage.

When I say miss a shot, I am talking about focus, frame per second, low light and things like shutter lag. I know the parameters of the other cameras I have like the Point and shoot Nikon P5100, its not going to be all that good at low light, have shutter lag and no real flash to speak of. I can work around this to a certain point but sooner than later, there will be missed shots because of the limitations of the camera. Same goes with the D300 I seldom use. For me professionally, one missed shot could mean a paycheck and I have always carried over this same work ethic when I am shooting personal, non-paid stuff. And just to be clear, I am not using the P5100 at work:)

Can I produce outstanding images from the lesser camera, sometimes yes. But for that to happen life has to stop and work around the camera limits. As a working pro, life doesn't stop and my camera and me have to work with what gets thrown our way. I have learned year's age just use the pro camera.

BTW, my comment ”the 12MP D3 can do more than you might think….and 20X30 prints” was because I thought the original post was asking about a D3X. He was asking about a D3s.

I am well aware of the 12mp capabilities as well as the specific capabilities of the D3, D3x and D3s. I shoot weekly with guys using the D3. one just jumped to a D3s and loves it. I can guaranty my images are every bit as good as theirs because we have proven it. based on your last comment, you say basically that it comes down to speed. if it really comes down speed you must be shooting for the NFL or shooting cheetahs. I have yet to even see any of your work...
sorry to sound so sarcastic here, but this is the internet and I see a lot of weekend shooters claims at being pro. Being the 20 year veteran photog that ya are, I am even more surprised to hear your claims for a digital camera Vs. a film camera, after all, thats what REAL pros use... Why not a hasselblad or a mamiya? After all thats what a real commercial photog uses... get real, get round table
