Nikon's official release

Among all the other amazing features, I picked up on one massive number. Image files EXCEEDING 138 MB! That new 24.5 MP sensor sure is crunching the data!

All I can say is wow!

Wait'll you see what they have next! Yeah, that D3x is sweet, but they have more tricks up their sleeves. Promise...

That's cool and all, but as the wife is in the market for a high-end camera it is a little disconcerting that Nikon is falling victim to the same problems the computer/software biz did a few years back in these very quick feature releases. Sure it helps bring down some prices of the now mid-range but makes me hesitant to purchase. Am I totally off my rocker for thinking I'm noticing this trend?

The recent D90/D700 releases have been pretty quick, and they are starting to cloud their own market segment (which IMO is a problem). They needed some way to justify all of the R&D for the new high-end cameras (i.e. D3 and D3x...). Now they have a flagship that will spank Canon for a while, they can tout it in their marketing and get all those people with 'lesser' Nikon's to drool and wish they could upgrade...and they will...just not to the top level of the D3x. At 8K it's a steep price, but believe me people will pay. It's a hell of a lot less than any Hassy right now (but they do make a beautiful 256mb file from a 39mp chip).

This will be fun to see where the MP race goes. IMO it's worthless to cram more pixels on a chip w/out increasing dynamic range.

I'm still furious over the whole raw image format `competition' too. There have been (and still are) many dozens of historical image formats that can support arbitrary bit-depths, arbitrary channels and quantization including vector descriptions too, alas here these major companies fall victim to the same industry comparison problems.

Keep it open and standardize, I don't know why we need another business lesson in technology.

Eh...there's trade offs with this camera. Much lower ISO's, slower frame rates etc.

Clean high ISO's provide you with so many more opportunities. More pixels give you nothing in terms of flexibility. It's pretty clear that Nikon built this camera for the studio guys and gals.

IMO it's worthless to cram more pixels on a chip w/out increasing dynamic range.

I agree. Funny too, neither Nikon or Canon has been able to get close to touching Fuji's S3, and that camera came out how long ago.....?
