Nikon Nerds - today is the day...

I'm thinking about upgrading my wifes D200 (was looking at the D300s) and then I'll step into her D200 (currently using a D40)... Thoughts? Her current lenses are DX, and everything I'm reading says that stepping up to the D700 without FX lenses does allow for full use of the camera...

I believe the price between the D300s and D700 is pretty close.

The newest DX camera is the D7000 which is a great camera, the 700 is FX so you would need new lenses. Having shot a D300 and owning the D7000 for about a 9 months now I would pick the 7000 any day mostly because of the U1 and U2 modes which are really nice. There are a ton of reviews all over the web that will more accurately explain the differences.

The D200 is an alright camera. However the D300 blows it out of the water.

Right now I am heavily pondering a used D700. I've had good luck with used equipment and saving a grand or so is vastly appealing. However my D300 is just working too well, however its age is showing. I checked and it just rolled over 70,000 shutters. That is starting to get a little high. I feel like transitioning to the D700 won't be too painful. Use the same battery and cards. Just need to ditch/put aside my 18-200 and get a 28-300 (or whatever FX version they have). I've been comparing the D700 to the D800, I'm not fully convinced that it is the right choice for me.
