The Pure Photography mini site is up on Nikon and they're teasing their new no video, metal body, real dials, full frame, not mirrorless, F-mount camera. A reported FM2/3 like digital camera.
I'm reading a bit smaller than a D600. The lack of aperture ring is no surprise, that's a lens feature. I like the ISO dial and there looks to be a few more dials there. I will say this, "IF" this camera turns out to be what is expected, a very simple, very intuitive, well built stills camera that takes extraordinary images, it will make a lot of people very happy. I love my D800 and it's a brilliant camera, but it is far from simple. I also find it interesting that before the rumors started surfacing about this camera Mark Dubovoy wrote an article on the luminous landscape appealing for just such a thing. The article, "An Appeal for Divergence and Simplicity" can be read here. I have to agree too, while having all the bells and whistles is nice at times, sometimes it's just too much and distracts from the shooting experience. I think that's why I like iPhone photography so much.... it's fun and simple, frame the shot, push the button....done.It looks a little bit bigger than I thought, is it as big as a d800? And, it also looks like no aperture ring and the back is looking pretty modern.
so it's like the olympus omd... retro looking body shell...

size/weight is a biggie for me.. this thing is still DSLR sized..
the Fuji x100.. ahh that's a wonderful package.. i love mine.
No I don't think Nikon is trying to be OMD like, the OMD while a terrific camera can hardly be called simple. And size isn't something Nikon is overly concerned with with this camera, obviously. If it were they wouldn't have opted to use a big pentaprism. What I think they are trying to achieve is a level of simple functionality that can produce excellent results, hearkening back to the days of the old FE's and FM's. The old F's could hardly be called small, but they were simple, uncomplicated, workhorse cameras that did their job, and did them well. This is clearly the direction Nikon is taking with their choice to focus all efforts on this camera to stills only. No video modes, no fluff, just stills and a wonderful shooting experience. It's tough to say how this camera will do, if the price is right and the results and experience using it is positive it could do well. It could fall flat on its face too.
I don't think it's a mistake. Cameras have become very bloated items, many with so many features that very few ever use. I'd be curious to know how many people as a percentage actually take full advantage of the video function on most DSLR's, I can admit I hardly ever touch it. Did you read this article?. What are your thoughts?wait, no video mode? big mistake.. they are trying to purposely strip out features to make it appealing? That's Leica's playbook. A venn diagram never had Leica and Nikon coexisting in the same space..
