Nissan introduces the NV2500 work truck

Nissan revealed a prototype of its new work truck today. The new cab/chassis will be built in Mississippi on the assembly lines that were used for the Armada and Titan. Nissan is partnering with Cummins for engines, and ZF for automatic transmissions.

Cummins has a 4.2L V6 diesel ready to go. The V-6 is rated at 270 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque. Not enough power? The Cummins V8 diesel puts out 325 hp and 500 lb-ft of torque.

Sales of the NV2500 will start in 2010. No word about pricing yet.

Here's one prototype, set up as a work van. The vehicle is 19.5 feet long overall, about the same as an Econoline extended length van. Wheelbase is 10 inches longer than an Econoline, so there is less rear overhang. There is 10.5 feet or cargo space inside the vehicle with the passenger's seat folded.

It's easy to see the potential here for conversion to a camper van. Now we need to encourage Nissan to pull some components from the Titan 4x4 parts bin!

It's interesting to speculate: Maybe a Cummins engine could find its way into the Frontier and Pathfinder, two models that use the F-Alpha frame like the Titan and Armada do.

There are lots more photos on Autoblog:

Nissan also showed a smaller concept truck called the NV200. This one is built on their smaller B chassis. No production plans were announced for this truck, but you can be sure that Nissan will keep an eye on the sales of the Ford Transit Connect.

Somebody should get Sportsmobile working on a conversion of this vehicle!

What a killer rig for someone in a wheelchair. Look at all the room and level floor layout.
I think we should ask for a 4wd option just to let them know we are out here!
Great post, thanks

the only problem is the nose is sooooo long on that thing, otherwise it's a great pkg
the sprinter seems to have an edge on practicality, Nissan has the Cummins...

Why always the mention of Cummings when discussing Nissan vehicles? Doesn't Nissan itself already have capable diesel engines from both its automotive and heavy truck divisions?

This concept is seriously cool, and shows great potential for a
camper. Somebody should call Sportsmobile!

The NV2500 uses a chassis similar to the Nissan Titan pickup,
so it should be possible for Nissan to introduce a 4x4 version
of the NV2500 without too much extra engineering. No word
on powerplants for the NV2500 yet.

"Why always the mention of Cummings when discussing Nissan vehicles? Doesn't Nissan itself already have capable diesel engines..."

Nissan and its partner Renault make diesels for light and medium trucks, including the Nissan Patrol SUV. Neither have gone through the engineering and expense to be certified by the EPA to be legal for sale in USA. The new Cummins (note the spelling) V6 and V8 turbodiesels have, so they are ready to go in USA.

Cummins also has a strong positive identity with USA truck owners, so having a Cummins engine under the hood would attract attention from new truck buyers.

The primary reason, however, is more complicated. Nissan wanted to shut down its slow-selling Titan pickup assembly line in a couple of years. The plan was for Nissan to purchase pickups and truck chassis for the new NV commercial truck line from Dodge. Dodge already had a relationship with Cummins, and was planning to use the new Cummins V6 and V8 in the Dodge 1500 pickup and Durango SUV.

Strapped for cash, Dodge has put its light diesel plans on hold, and Nissan has delayed its plan to purchase chassis/cab models from Dodge. So the NV2500 will use the Nissan Titan chassis for a little while longer. Note that the Titan is not available as a 2500 series pickup, so the NV2500 chassis will need to be a little different than the Titan pickup uses. And the NV2500 will have to use the Titan's gas V8 for the time being.

Because few others have passed the emissions requirements of the US.Gov. Cummins, Powerstroke, and Detriot are just a few that have done it.

I'm not sure how this relates to the thread but neither Cummins, Powerstroke nor Duramax are owned by Ford if that's what you were trying to say.

Now all that has to happen is get a few of these wrecked so we have a nice relatively light 270/420 diesel for transplant into some real 4X4s, like Landcruisers etc. I wonder if it will have urea injection/SCR or EGR? EGR is way worse for the engine but at least it's "deletable".
Is this for real that someone is putting this smaller diesel in a vehicle?
We need a few diesel AWD cars.

That engine was going to be more plentiful when Dodge had plans to put it in their half ton trucks but that seems unlikely to happen at least for a while. Everything looks like its going to need exhaust fluid by January. I think Urea is going to be a fact of life like topping up the bug juice every other tank.

The urea in our X5 lasts ~10K miles. It's a 6-7 gal tank, 10K is ~470 gal, so that's 1.5% of fuel. DEF/DPF defeats are possible but probably require substantial electronic gerrymandering. Pre 2007 EGR defeat is easy by comparison.

The NV ("Nissan Van") line was introduced today at the Work Truck Show in St Louis.

You can see from the photos below that the NV line is based on the Titan pickup chassis. The driving position is behind the engine, not beside it as in the Ford Econoline and Chevy Express vans. Base engine is Nissan's excellent 4.0L V-6, used in the Frontier and Pathfinder. Optional is the 5.6L V-8 found in the Titan and Armada. Transmission is five-speed automatic only. No mention was made of 4x4 or all wheel drive.

Nissan says that Cummins will provide a diesel for the NV line, but it won't be available immediately. Ford no longer offers a diesel in the E-series vans, but GM still does in their vans.

The NV line will have 1/2 ton, 3/4 ton and 1 ton models called the NV1500, NV2500 and NV3500, respectively. They share a single 146 inch wheelbase.

The NV1500 is available only in a low roof design, which offers about 55 inches of headroom in the van, and about 220 cubic feet of cargo space. The standard Ford E150 has interior volume of about 238 cu ft.

NV1500.jpg

The NV2500 and NV3500 are available in low and high roof models. The high roof provides 76 inches of vertical room, and 300 cubic feet of space. The 144 inch wheelbase Sprinter with high roof provides the same 76 inches of standing room, but has 371 cu ft of space. (The extended wheelbase Sprinter with mega-roof offers 600 cu ft!)

NV2500-2.jpg

I'm not sure that the NV3500 will need dual rear wheels to raise cargo capacity to 1 ton.

could they have made it uglier?

:)

seriously though, won't take long before someone makes a 4x4 home-made version...
