No More Metris > 2023, Sprinters lose gas motors > 2023

Just read that Mercedes is killing the further sale of the mid-sized Metris Vans in North American after 2023.That’s unfortunately going to hurt quite a few west coast upfitters who’ve been building some nice pop top campers out of these rigs.

Worst yet perhaps, they’re also saying they’re killing off the sale of gas engine* Sprinters post 2023.

So….fence sitters, If you’ve been thinking about buying a new Sprinter to convert to a camper but don’t like the added complications of one with of a diesel motor (despite its better mpgs and power), you better get your gas model ordered ASAP!

*EDIT: As engine power is referred to ⬇️…I took a quick second look at this engine. The tiny gasser found in the smaller Metris seems to be the same gas motor used on the full size Sprinter! That does sound desperately underpowered!

I doubt many people bought these with the wee 2L gas engine. Too weak for this market. There are better options for vans than the Sprinter or Metris IMO, so not a great loss...

That's a bummer about the metris - I've interacted with a couple companies that build them out (in Seattle and Santa Cruz) and it seems like they are decently popular for a certain crowd. They're basically the closest thing to a Westie in terms of size.

I personally like how roomie they are inside (let's be honest, a lot of people don't need a sprinter sized van for their weekend trips). There is also a tremendous amount of European aftermarket camper parts for them.

I saw one the other day. Well prepared by an avid angler.
It had one person folded bad. It’s quite roomy too.

I was wondering if it worth to consider it? Given the fact that it will be discontinued and soon after the parts will be scarce.

That’s a good question. I’ve had the same concerns. One wonders if it’s still going to be produced for foreign markets. If so, maybe parts won’t be that hard to get here in the USA?

I think, and this might be a rumor, that there is a state / federal law which assures that a manufacturer keeps making parts for some years after they discontinue the model. I don't know the name of that regulation or law.

For the reason I was/am interested in the Nissan Van (low roof version). It's been discontinued by the part might be still in production per that regulation, assuming it is correct.

What I liked it is that it is roomy and yet quite proportioned. He said the engine was plenty enough but he does not drive above the speed limit. It's got a bit of low set but it can be dealt with.

For some reason it is expansive.
