No standard cab Tacoma in 2015 ?

Truck Trend magazine is reporting that Toyota is seriously considering discontinuing the standard cab pickup from the Tacoma line in 2015. The logic is that Access Cab and Double Cab models are more popular. Competitor Nissan doesn't make a standard cab Frontier any more, and it's looking like GM will not have a standard cab version when the new Colorado and Canyon pickups are introduced late this year.

Over at Pickuptrucks.com, they speculate that Toyota may have plans to replace the standard cab with a new, inexpensive unibody runabout.

Or is all this an example of the "Washington Monument" negotiation tactic. For example, when a division of the federal government is asked to reduce its budget, the division responds, "Well, we could sell the Washington Monument." To which everyone responds in horror, and the budget remains intact. Maybe Toyota is spreading this rumor to see who reacts the loudest.

Would you care if Toyota eliminated the standard cab Tacoma?

I was surpised when I read that. That being said I wouldn't buy a regular cab again. My 1989 regular cab was so limited on room it was only good for two people. Even now my 2000 extended cab feels limited on room.

I hope they don't discontinue the standard cab. I would consider getting a Toyota standard cab in the near future just to fix it up for short camping trips and still be a DD. There's just the two of us anyway.
4x4, 4 cylinder - could make an interesting project for camping with a shell or ? Least expensive pickup out there, according to 4-Wheeler recently. Everyone buys the extra-cab or double-cab. Might be fun to be different and modify a standard cab.

I have a sentimental attachment to the regular cabs, my first truck was a 2000 regular cab Prerunner, the perfect car for college (sorry, I can't drive, only two seats). I won't be owning one for many years now due to having a young child but there is always the possibility of keeping the 4Runner and picking up a regular cab as a run around truck.

I love my regular cab! Id hate to see them go but I figure it is inevitable. Bigger is better right?

i'm 5'6", 185#, and have all I can do to fit into my access cab.

I'm 6' 4" and fit ok in my regular cab. I mean, I'm not lounging back and bringing six passengers. But for two people it is fine, easy to park and superb off road. I'll be sorry to see them drop the regular cab, but we all know the truck market is strongly in the direction of not very truck-like vehicles. More like SUVs with a tiny truck bed attached, leather, etc. if that's what people want, who am I to argue?

Toyota could use a basic uni-body little truck that achieves fantastic gas mileage, in the neighborhood of 30+, price it under $17K...might be a hot seller. Maybe under the Scion badge.

That reads like something directly out of the Toyota literature.

Toyota had a five year plan to do exactly that. The tundra moved up into full class, the Tacoma would move up into the Tundra size, and Toyota planned on releasing a prius branded pickup called the A-bat. Hybrid drive, economical, the size of original Toyota pickups from the eighties.

Preliminary concept design basicaly showed a 3/4 scale Honda Ridgeline.

The US economy took a huge dive right around that time, and Toyota reassessed having three different product lines.

after driving Saabs & VWs for 25 years I bought the Tacoma. after 2 years I still feel like i'm docking the Queen Mary. but when a Ford 150 pulls next to me, perspective is restored!

I am amazed at how many regular cabs I see here in Rural New Jersey. There are always a couple on the local lot too. Seems there is a market for them but I guess a small one.

I like my little Reg Cab when I'm alone but as I've said in many other posts, you add another human or dog to the mix and it gets tight quick. I plan on keeping it around for me to run around in and getting a Tundra or a fullsize domestic in a few years.

It's been a while (and production has moved), but I remember touring NUMMI several years ago and one of their issues was they actually had to produce more standard cabs than they wanted to, because the higher labor content in the double cab meant that they couldn't have them back-to-back on the assembly line. For every double cab they made, they HAD to make a standard cab. The writing was on the wall!

I liked the A-Bat. Too bad it didn't come market.

I knew if you gave it enough time the VW Caddy would make it's come back. Now all we need is the original Subaru Brat and life will be perfect!!
