Nokia PureView 808 -- camera with a phone attached

Nokia just announced a new phone, the PureView 808. I call it a camera with phone attached because it has a 41 megapixel sensor behind Zeiss optics. The sensor is larger than most point and shoot cameras have, and Nokia uses the pixels in a novel way called pixel-binning. You can produce 3, 5, 8, or 38 megapixel images. The result is the best camera ever in a phone.

Nokia plans to sell the 808 in Europe. But Nokia is part of Microsoft these days. I'm thinking that the camera technology will find its way to the new Windows 8 phones coming to us this Fall.

I won't try to explain how the pixel- binning technology works to produce better photos. DPReview's news item and the subsequent reader discussion provides the information.

The photos are nice and big, but a camera is so much more than just a sensor. I find the photos to lack the clarity and sharpness of real glass lenses. Carl Zeiss lens or no, I am just not seeing the compelling quality. I think the exposure meter is pretty good though. keep the proper context in mind, this is a phone with camera built in.. it's pretty amazing given the current market offerings..

Wooping 41 MPs. These phone along with Lumia can bring Nokia in Market like getting twitter followers from being a Dead phone. However, they have used Symbian OS in that which imo most stupid OS ever. Though, i do hope symbian doesnt kill its camera quality. Waiting for this phone.
